It will still need the same height to lift the wheels off the ground. If it doesn't stay seated when jacked up it is a failure. Look at the lucky escape thread in general automotive on here, that is a prime example of how dangerous it can be.

You need to raise the car to check wheel bearings, suspension springs etc
The springs are held in by themselves but the suspension at full droop is limited by the travel on the shock absorbers.
