1.4 and 1.6 are both very similar so you could still go down that route and use the 1.6 bottom end. not sure if the heads are any/much different?
if you were going for a 1.6 bottom end you could get it blueprinted before it went on, that would be nice!
as said the 1.6 isnt a torque monster and the 1.4 doesnt have much power!
the actual internals are slightly different, its not just the same engine with a turbo bolted on, but since it runs at a really low boost the d4f would be fine with it i would think.
not sure if its just a case of...
when i saw the aberdeen lot turn up at the RR day i shot outside to look at ali's vee! lol
my mate had never saw one in real life and just said "oh my f**king god!" he didnt realise it was really that wide in real life!!
i was in 5th instead of 4th but it still fuking pulled lol, once i got the revs up your car stoped increasing the gap but i couldnt get any closer lol, i was well impressed with it, so was my mate.

the engines vary in power that much that really, you cant pick one thats faster than the other, some 172s make 165bhp or less some make 172 or more! same goes for the 182.
but as we all know weight also affects the handling! thats another...
change the gearbox oil more regularly (possibly every oil change while your at it anyway) and be slow and gentle with the gear changes and it should be ok.
id avoid full throttle in first gear too (probably useless with that sort of power anyway!)
not sure how much difference a sticking caliper would make, one of mine was sticking the day before the RR actually, sorted it while doing my brakes, deffo worth a look
pattern cat is probably your problem you would think, made mega cheap! at least it means you get a better power gain from a...
john just so you know on the patern part exhaust thing, i ran 172.9bhp on a standard 172 apart from an ITG filter, and its running a patern part centre section (genuine backbox and cat though) and the exhaust blowing at the join between the cat and centre section.
the labour is the expensive part tbh and atleast if you've got another car you can take your time and do it over time, getting help from here when/if you need it.
my 1.2 16v failed an MOT on both front disks being cracked to f**k, Black Diamond drilled and grooved disks, wont touch drilled disks again! lucky they had a lip and were needing replaced anyway so wasnt a great loss!
