I think i'd prefer to build with a used block TBH. When they've been used for a while they naturalise and are in a less stressed state through heat cycling. With modern manufacturing it's much less of a concern, probably no difference in a modern engine, but it still occurs in my head that it's...
not tried 423s in an engine, but I think they'll push peak power higher up the revs, and we'd need solid lifters to do that. We've been considering them, have to see what the other changes we've made do first though.
certainly nothing lost, the changeover is about 1600rpm anyway. it's an idle improving feature more than anything, but with ITBs a nice idle is very easy.
edit, without adjustable pulleys, you lose the ability to fine tune the cam timing so there's potential to make gains, but they're small...
in an ideal world adjustable pulleys are best (and lighter too) but you can use an exhaust pulley. Stock timing works well anyhow :) you have to use the non vvt cams though, they ARE different. Remember to use the the right cam seal (same as exhaust side) on the inlet cam if you go for VVT delete
420s are optimised standard spec, they only really exist for racing classes that require stock cams.
421s will cause problems with idle, on a ph1 172 this can be bodged round but with drive by wire throttle it will never idle right
428s will go straight in any 172/182
anything non...
Re: Mk1 Hybrid Project
I'd have to check a book, no idea off the top of my head, forged pistons are always non standard gaps and nearly always different between brands, and that's mostly what we do.
there's more things to check too, clearance in the ringland above/below the ring, finish of the...
yup. cups have a single piece long shaft too. If it's all you can get and it's cheaper than renault by a lot, just unbolt the bearing carrier and run a 1 piece shaft
Re: Mk1 Hybrid Project
FPS supply factors and trade suppliers, they wont deal with the public and wont sell direct to garages etc either. But you're right that's where pretty much everything comes from (unless you mean a different FPS)
not much point going high comp IMO if you dont run cam profiles that match the bottom end spec. I'm not even keen on 421s in a stock engine TBH, they're not s**t, but 428s work better IMO
Only deck the block if it's not flat. removing material will raise comp more, but the pistons will sit proud of the block, and with 422s that will get you worryingly close to valve contact.
Re: Mk1 Hybrid Project
what a load of c**k. all of that is total b****cks "made by williams" so not the same as a megane then??? i hate c***s that make this b****cks up
Re: Mk1 Hybrid Project
On a standard engine? No. Even on a fully balanced 4cyl engine the rods are not balanced WITH the crank. On other cylinder arrangements the specific rod and piston weights are used and bob weights attached to the crank.
on a 4 cyl, the piston weights are matched as...
Re: Mk1 Hybrid Project
a bearing failure like that means a FULL rebuild to me not just a repair job, so you're looking at a strip down and have everything properly cleaned first.
Oil pump, you can check clearances and look for scoring, but I'd go new once it's had bearing swarf through it...
