I've not seen those ones shear before, but i've removed broken cam cap bolts. odd they break so easily, the thread must be very bad or the bolts far too long
dont need verniers for a 172, cams work well timed as standard, but you do need the proper locking tools.

no, they're blind holes, and to take the rocker cover off is a cambelt off job. I'd cover the oilways with something and drill out the center of the bolt with a very small drill then use an easy-out
I'm assuming you mean ignition timing. You give an engine what it wants, not what you think it needs. You'll quite often find if you keep increasing the timing the power will drop off, even before detonation occurs, so "more" isn't necessarily better
yes, red anti-freeze is freely available. Just make sure you flush the system very thoroughly if it's had blue in there as you will get gelation because they dont mix, and you'll end up with a slimy header tank
if bits are bent I doubt it's do-able for that. be better off getting a second box and having 1 good one made from 2. Rebuilt box is the way forward though.
