Well if you’re going to go for a diff as well, I’d strongly advise upgrading, yes. The diff will load up the clutch even more.

Also worth noting, genuine Renault valeo clutches have thicker straps on them compared to the ‘oem’ valeo that you can get from the likes of ECP and GSF. The straps on those ones are noticeably less substantial.

See above 👆🏻 They don’t like high rpm downshifts as it loads the clutch cover up massively.

I think the straps on the clutch cover have let go - or at least some of them have and they’ve machined a hole in the bellhousing.

I’ll have a look and see if I’ve got a spare bell housing half of the casing. My mate who welds them up for me always looks at me like I’ve walked in his house on Christmas Day and pissed all over his kids when I roll up with a jc5. 😂😂

Or I’ve had a few that have broke a tooth off the sun gears in the diff, they’ve then got trapped between the casing and the diff body and broke the casing. End result is the same.

Clutch cover straps could’ve failed and machined a hole in the gearbox casing. That would explain the smoke and dripping oil.

End of the year before we will have seen everything that needs to be seen mate. Cost depends on the numbers.

It’s unlikely tbh mate. It’s not happened yet, and that looks more like it’s fatigue.

Well yeah you’re gonna have to pull the box out then mate. It shouldn’t have caused any issues having the lsd fitted, no. I also wouldn’t bother with a 5th gear as you don’t get in it on track anyway. And having had a megane 5th, I personally didn’t think it made enough of a difference.

If it’s crunching, it needs to come out and be rebuilt. End of. But, if you can pull the selector lever all the way down when underneath it, you may be able to lift the rod pictured under the end cap up. The gearbox is trying to select 3rd gear, so if that rod gets knocked inside the box you...

The 3MO sequential is a decent box mate and the aftersales back up from them is also extremely good.

Oh well that’s a bit s**t then! Lol! Genuine Renault items are still available anyway?! You’re looking at whatever the cost of the quaife diff is, plus £300. TL4 boxes generally only need the synchros on 3rd and 4th mate.

Well that’s an interesting noise! If it drives with no whines from the box, it can only be the clutch. And why they didn’t look inside the bell housing through the clutch fork opening is bemusing. It’s literally just a case of disconnecting the cable, pop the rubber out and see what you can...

I might still have a pair off my old cup tbh, but I’d need to check and confirm.

I’ve got a pair of synchros for the TL4 in stock. They were brass in the 197, then redesigned to be steel for the 200. Renault then realised that the steel ones were just as s**t, so went back to brass.

Chesman Engineering in Coventry is bang on the money for the machining. Not sure if they do porting as well, but worth an ask.
