The only reason 17s slow you down is if the overall diameter is bigger i.e if you fit 205/40R17 you should fit 215/35R17 and then performance wont suffer.
Ive said this many times now.
Far point, the one I drove had less than 1000 miles on the clock but then so did the S3 that I drove. Its not just the accelertation of the Leon that was the dissapointment when coming from 172 you appraciate the handling more and the Leon just comes accross as a big wet lettuce. Understeer...
Im waiting for some info regarding this. But Im looking at 215/35R17 you could speak to demon tweeks and get their opinion on this!!?
I had 205/40R17 and I am 99% certain that they affected performance big time. I will post the info once I have it.
Oh and I would go for the Toyos over the Yokos
Done a search on Google get 2,940,000 results all of them useless :D
Feel free to come and try my 16" wheels and only then will you see the difference :)
Right....I have learnt from experience so here goes. Its not weight as such that kills acceleration but overall diameter of the wheel. A few stats on weight:
My original 172 alloys and tyres = 16.7kg
New Speedline Turinis (205/40R17) = 16.5kg
But
Original Diameter = 582mm
New diameter...
I have driven a Leon Cupra and no its not a fast as an S3!! Only Autocar has given it those ludicrous stats everyone else has 0-60 in 7.2 and 0-100 in 20, 30-70 in around 6 secs. Yes they have loads of tuning potential but go and drive one and youll realise they arent all theyve cracked up to...
Girlracer just get it you know you want to! Plus there will be slightly more paintwork for you keep clean. AND when your finished with it and it only has an extra 500 miles on the clock I can buy it off you :)
Yeah make sure you can find a good dealer to get it serviced at first!!
Other than that not much goes wrong, only problems I have had have been caused by the dealers.
My local place charges £20 for the front and £20 for the rear so I suppose it depends where you go. Just make sure you go to a reputable place where you can trust them!!
Hi mate welcome to the club.
I think on a MK1 with 17s and the amount of drop you have then rubbing is inevitable. It will wear your tyres quicker and unevenly.
You could get the arches rolled will cost a little but could solve your problem. Is it rubbing at the front or the back?
Paul
Yes it does its the diameter that is the biggest killer!!!! NOT the weight. My new wheels are lighter than the standard 16s they are the same as paul172cups yet they slow me down cos they are 15mm bigger in diameter. I would never have believed it myself until its happend!!
