Yeah I was there - no mention of anything like that though - took them about 20 minutes to fit. It was a hot sunny day in July last year though so I didnt sit and watch as it wa nicer out in the sunshine!
The vast majority of performance exhausts run from the existing cat backwards - the Cat remains in place. You can remove it if you want (with a de-cat pipe), but on a 172 this is difficult as the ECU uses sensors in the cat to determine fuel / air mixture etc.

If you stick it on properly it wont come off. Mines been on for a year now - no problems. Clean the glass really well and then dry it with a hairdryer before putting the sticker on. And be careful with the ice-scraper!
I have 159bhp at the wheels (with a Pipercross panel filter). Not as loud as the k-tec (which is really loud), but a nice rumble in town and a good wail at speed! Another view:
