You will get better results with a foam type product yes if you want shaving foam type results, otherwise normal shampoo will be ok.
I use a small amount of snow foam mixed with normal shampoo myself as I am not 100% convinced how was friendly they are.

Not the easyist product to use, but is damn durable. Works well when mastered.
For me these days the likes of Jeffs Acyrlic Jett Trigger can do the same thing in a spray and wipe format and save me some effort.
Again the above works well, but while removing the bugs chances are it will be stripping off your wax or sealant. Ideally you don't want to have to use anything other than shampoo and water unless you want to re-protect.
Even 15-20 seconds in the same spot you would struggle to do much. In the same token I struck through paint on a 182 in much less.
Tom - I know what you mean, I have not even used a cutting pad on most of mine as I know it will be hear for the long term.
I have a bit left in a bottle, produces a fairly slick wash not overly suddy though, worked out expensive when you look at what you can get a US Gallon or the SHampoo Plus or Hyperwash for.
Blotting is only for the drying stage when using waffle weave type towels.
Polishing, Waxing and QDing I always use plush Microfibers and wipe normally.

A good carnuba wax would finish things off, choice depends on your budget and cars colour.
My TomTom One has speed cameras and works through the screen, picks them up around the same time as my RA2 does. The updates for the TomTom speed camera database have also just gone weekly.
If your car was clean enough you would have had nothing to worry about! The only thing I used to dislike the non standard cars in the standard classes, or people that made mods to there car such as painting the floor pan and still wanting to stay in that class.
