Nein. You need a surface for the wax to bond to. If it's a new car, a wash, dry, paint cleanser then wax will work nicely. I would advise an IPA (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Isopropyl_alcohol) wipe down then apply the wax.

Can I be honest Tommy? You don't. At least not on your own car. This really does require skill. It is actually quite easy (as it sounds, it's just like sanding wood) but it is just as easy to c**k it up. Have a really good read of the above, then get a practise panel, get good at doing it...
