Bit of a weird one! But went to run up my track car this evening to find the battery completely dead. Not a sausage. My nephew had been playing with the switches so I assumed it was just him playing around and I had left the ignition on by mistake.
No bother, stuck it on charge for a bit. Then...
So my ph1 headlights are in pretty poor condition including some internal adjustment mechanisms broken.
Most of the genuine ones you see online are also faded with snapped mounts.
There does seem to be places selling OEM looking ones brand new for a range of prices. Has anyone ever tried any...
Does anyone know how the fan is wired up on these? Not sure there is a difference on the ph1 to the ph2 but I remember reading somewhere there is a connection for low speed and one for high based on AC demand. I basically have this:
Please enjoy my lovely sketch. But yeh, basically two wires...
Is this a thing?
The way I see it the oil cooler will be dry. You can crank the engine to get some oil flow but with the thermostatic sandwich plate this is surely all going to bypass the actual cooler.
How do you prime the actual cooler core so it does suddenly open at a certain temperature...
Got my engine back from the machine shop and these plugs appear to have been removed, I'm guessing they're oil plugs for the channels into the jets. does anyone know where I can get new ones? Do they just push in?
What order do people run their sandwich plates (assuming they have two)? Most of the ones I've seen are as below, sensor take off first followed by oil cooler:
I've been thinking that this doesn't make any sense. Since both plates affect the outer channel of the oil path, and the oil filter...
Do the 172 cups have a steering angle sensor?
I have a ph1 track project and I think I have broken the steering angle sensor. I don't have ABS or traction control so I am questioning if I really even car if the sensor doesn't work and just rip it out. I wanted to check if this sensor is used...
So my engine failed a compression test and I'm 99% sure it's the piston rings and a scabby cylinder that is the cause.

Trying to turn failure into a silver lining im leaning more towards a rebore and oversized pistons (I also...
Hi Everyone,
Seem to be having a spot of bother getting my track car started up after a fairly large overhaul this summer.
Signs are points to the ECU being the issue as I am not getting any power to the coil pack.
Earths are all good and the power is getting to pin 30 and 29 ok.
Fuel pump...
So! Rebuild complete and engine back in the car. Obviously it didn't start first time that would be too easy! So putting together a plan of things to check. My suspicion is that the ECU (Gen90 repined for a ph1 by yours truly) is not getting 12v.
Things to note:
Car has not started in ~15years...
Did a little search on this topic and coudnt find anything.
The PMS shifter comes with a slight angle in the shifter:
Is this angle meant the knob towards the front of the vehicle or the rear?
I have currently got it leaning the knob back but I'm getting some contact with the heat shield.
I had previously removed my alternator plug and fitted a spade connector as I was running an alternator from a mk1 on the alternator mounts I have.
Now I have a new cup alternator, I am told the VVT solenoid plug can be used on the alternator so will wire that on but what pin do I need to wire...
I am planning on having my track car completed by sometime late spring, it has been about 10 years since I have had a road legal track car and it seems that the MOTs have gotten a lot stricter with more binary rules like "factor safety equipment must be retained".
Now I know a number of people...
I mentioned this in another thread but it didn't get anything back so its getting its own thread.
I have installed the uprated oil pump kit from PMS as part of my bottom end rebuild. The clearance to the crank is quite concerning to be honest, got about a gnats pube worth of clearance to the...
I'm really on the fence about resealing the rear (flywheel) crank seal.
I know it's a common leak point and people recommend doing it, but on the other hand this is all the leaking it's done since new (1999) so I'm not sure if it's better to just leave it than disturb it.
I'm pretty sure im going to drop the sump on my track build but I've already put the head back on so cant disassemble the block completely. There is also nothing wrong with the block or bottom end bearings (i dont think) which is why i initially didnt plan on openning it up at all. But if the...
Has anyone replaced their sump bolts with regular cap heads to get rid of the nasty inverted torx bits?
I want to drop my sump and one of the hardest to get to is already rounded with a couple of others looking worse for wear.
I'd just replace them with standard cap heads if possible, they...
I'm hoping a vague title will increase traffic out of pure curiosity.
Had some cams delivered from catcams today (after waiting nearly 12, weeks until winter 😤)
Both the cams had this little pin thing in the packaging. Does anyone know what it is for?
Does anyone just remove these and run without?
These things:
You dont have these on the MK1s, not really sure what they do, maybe something to do with crash?
This would be on a track car/weekend toy.
Any engine loom needs that can tell me what these plugs on the engine loom are for?
Loom: ph1 172 engine
Location: back of the transmission, near the starter motor
There are two of these three pin ones, one goes to the speed sensor thought not completely sure which.
Then there are these two...
Hello - when stripping down my engine i noticed i failed to take note of a few bolt sizes to replace.
I dont suppose anyone knows off the top of their head these bolts sizes?
I assume they're M10x15mm but what length?
I know this has been discussed a lot in other threads but they rarely seem that conclusive.
I am looking to understand the best Cat Cam part number to suit the following build:
Uprated valve springs
Standard internals
non-VVT
I know people suggest getting 5502421 but these are VVT cams...
Trying to take the head off, first two bolts came off with some encouragement, but the third has managed to sheer most of the head of the torq head bolt clean off leaving a nub that you can't really get purchase on. Tried another bolt and it has started doing the same thing.
Anyone has this...
Any ideas what this could be? It's started happening during my rebuild and no idea where to start with it. It seems to happen once after being left a while then not again. Pressing the pedal (while stationary with no servo connected) there is a loud bang and the pedal jolts.
Note that the...
Afternoon all! I did have a quick search on this topic but I didn't find anything concrete (and within the last few years).
So after realising that the cams I have to go in my engine build are not compatible with the standard valve springs I have resigned to the idea of removing the hard from...
Hey Everyone,
I am planning on replacing my cams for cat cams later in the year and I wondered if there is a guide on here for doing so?
I'm aware that there is a guide on here for a cambelt change which I have read but it appears to lack a number of torque settings for various bolts and I...
Is there any go to place people in Essex use for machining 197 callipers to fit under 15s?
Better yet does someone on here do it in exchange for my nudes?
