    Decats and the law!!

The chances of getting caught are remote in the extreme, and you ought to get a chance to rectify the 'fault', unless the car is well illegal or you give lip. So drive a nice car well, and be nice if stopped! ;)

what should a decat gain me..BHP?

d.brown, sorry for delay - de-cat from member on this site, Andy GDI.

what should a decat gain me..BHP?

Sorry Freebone, I was only answering the questions! But call this a "bloody argument"? You haven't been on the internet very long! ;) Anyway. After 20 miles mpg down to 34.7 with lowest of 31.5. Now after 30 miles up to 36 mpg. This is marginally less than the usual about 37 mpg but...

what should a decat gain me..BHP?

Because burning fossil fuels releases the chemicals the fossils contain, so it has to be non-fossil powered. Want an electric car powered from wind farms? The problem is we want fast cheap motoring but to save the planet we need to have expensive slow cars. We don't want to save the planet...

what should a decat gain me..BHP?

Do you lot believe everything the government tells you? Next you'll be saying that speeding really IS a major cause of death!?! :D

what should a decat gain me..BHP?

The Fatty, it certainly IS a con and, by the sounds of it, the con's worked on you! The gases without a cat are poisonous, so not good, but the gases with a cat are destroying the ozone layer. So you can choose short term health problems (no cat), or long term destruction of the planet (with...

what should a decat gain me..BHP?

Are you sure about that? That doesn't sound like a problem caused by the cat being removed. I suppose it's possible there is a post-cat sensor that confuses the ECU when there's no cat, but my 182 doesn't appear to have a problem. So far mpg about the same, no dash light and no white smoke...

what should a decat gain me..BHP?

I wasn't going to give a progress report so soon but today I filled up and reset the trip. Drove for 3.6 miles in careful economic way (still fastest car on road inc overtaking but also following car for 1 mile at 35mph) and got 39.8 mpg on trip. This is not much different to usual as mpg...

what should a decat gain me..BHP?

Because it has the wrong TYPE of emissions! A cat doesn't "collect" anything from the gases or it would "fill up". Whatever goes in MUST come out, the cat just changes 1 form of gas you don't want, into another form of gas you don't want. It's a bit of a con really. But in restricting...

what should a decat gain me..BHP?

Gary G, worth the money? Well it's only a piece of pipe with 3 connectors for about £70 so hardly great VFM (although still one of the cheapest) but have to give a proper run over different conditions to be sure. See if I really think it's faster and see what mpg it gives. Needs at least a...

what should a decat gain me..BHP?

Been out for a drive and 1st impressions are a slightly free-er throttle response, though this could be the placibo effect. At full revs felt very similar to before and no difference to noise levels noticed at all. Spykee, Even if the engine does not fuel any differently than before then more...

what should a decat gain me..BHP?

Hi Freebone, I have a standard 182 and about to fit a de cat pipe, I'll see what it does soon! See other thread "BHP Gains From a decat?" I wrote; Why remove the Cat? Theoretical and minor benefits are (in order - possibly?); 1) slightly more power 2) slightly more reliable...

    BHP Gains From a decat?

Because the benefits of de-cat had been questioned I tried to list all the advantages + disadvantages and put them in order of importance. I left out the benefit of being able to use a wider range of fuels, eg leaded, as I don't think there are any leaded fuels available at all now...

    BHP Gains From a decat?

Why remove the Cat? Theoretical and minor benefits are; 1) slightly more power 2) slightly more reliable 3) slightly more mpg 4) slightly lighter 5) slightly lower maintenance costs 6) slightly less emissions 7) slightly louder Disadvantages; 1) illegal emissions therefore...

    BHP Gains From a decat?

What car Gavo? I assume 172? 182 is easy, but isn't 172 quite awkward? Andyman, why should light come on? And if "unburnt" fuel is heading down the exhaust best get rid of the cat fast, unburnt fuel can destroy it! Possibly then repair engine?
  17. D

    Which is better exhaust?

I'm puzzled. Why ask everyone which exhaust to buy if, when the answer is overwhelmingly Magnex, you choose Mongoose anyway? ;) Good result getting a nearly new exhaust for £80 even if it was the one you didn't want! Are you just talking back-box(s) or cat-back or manifold-back...
  18. D

Extra BHP for £6 can this be real?

They're now £2 on Ebay! That's £0.05 for the resistor and £1.95 for the knowledge of what value and where to put it! It ought to work. There will be a safety margin built in to the ECU mapping and you're just eating into that. By fooling the ECU into thinking the air is colder than it...

Removing Catalitic convertor from 182, possible?

Thanks ben p but can you clarify? Obviously 1st sensor need to be in place and connected but should 2nd sensor (after cat if fitted) be "in place in exhaust flow and connected" or connected but not placed in exhaust flow (just tucked up somewhere)? And will the cat light come on or stay off...

182 suspension (cup), what's the best upgrade?

Is there a web site for Gaz so I can read up on their product or a review of them somewhere? I assume "fully adjustable" means "adjustable rebound dampers" and not bump settings or ride height?
  21. D

Removing Catalitic convertor from 182, possible?

I'm fairly sure de-cat will fail MOT on emissions but there are new fuel and intake devices which might bring it back under legal limit. If so then a very good solution but I was most concerned whether it would work at all! The amount it fails by is a useful guide as to whether it's even...

182 suspension (cup), what's the best upgrade?

Sorry, didn't know though I had a quick scan before posting didn't see anything similar. So do other 182 drivers have the same assessment of the 182 suspension as I do then? From; http://www.yozzasport.co.uk/store/products.php?cat=8 the Bilstiens are expensive at £1,650 and assume are...

182 suspension (cup), what's the best upgrade?

Looks like Ledas are this forums choice. I meant for the road though I used to drive rally cars on the road so I can put up with a stiffer setup than most. £1200 is a LOT for 4 dampers + 4 springs, obviously they would be adjustable rebound dampers so at least some degree of preference could...

Removing Catalitic convertor from 182, possible?

Thanks chaps, at least I now know it works! Has anyone with a de-cat system checked the MOT emissions? I assume it will fail but by how much? What are the readings for each gas?
  25. D

182 suspension (cup), what's the best upgrade?

I've noticed the 182 suspension is a bit rubbish (with cup suspension option). The spring rates are ok (though front could go a bit stiffer) and the damper bump rates are ok but the damper rebound rates are way too low. It makes the car slightly wallowy over uneven surfaces and very nervous...

what fuel to use in 182

ianlowry, yes. I use ordinary unleaded. When I do use Optimax or other higher octane I notice little or no difference in power but I do notice a measurable DROP in mpg. Surprising as it may seem ordinary unleaded gives me the best mpg at around 37 mpg, Optimax drops this to around 34 mpg...

Removing Catalitic convertor from 182, possible?

Thanks chaps, seems removing the cat will work and thanks 7MAT for info at http://www.yozzasport.co.uk/store/products.php?cat=17 . This pipe only removes cat but it looks like 1st silencer is quite restrictive aswel. I'll try to find pipe that removes cat AND 1st silencer, perhaps with a better...

Removing Catalitic convertor from 182, possible?

Hi everyone, Is it possible to get a straight through pipe to replace the Catalitic convertor from exhaust of a 182? I assume the sensor after the cat would still need to be in place but will the engine run and will it run correctly? With no Catalitic convertor it ought to have a little more...
