0w40 engine oil

I've read a few threads where people do use this grade of oil and was just wondering if there was any major draw backs to using it then maybe the engine burning it off a little quicker than the 5w40 grade. I can get it from Costco fairly cheaply, cheaper than the 5w40 grade.

Also is there anywhere other than Renault I can get a sump plug washer? Saves me having to drive 10miles for a £1 part. Tried ECP but they don't stock them.

I'd stick to what's recommended tbh Jon. Doubt there will be any advantages of using different oil anyway.

I've had mine changed about three times this year without changing the washer and it's been fine.

Yeah I agree, doubt there will be any advantages other than it's alot cheaper. Can't remember if it was a 4L or a 5L bottle but it was Mobil 1 for £22 the last time I checked.

the Renault sump seal's a dowty washer, but one of these copper crush washers would do the job. ECP keep them (as do lots of others), but they may not be listed against the car - just need to be sure you get one with the correct internal diameter

I reckon oil will go lower than that.

Its the viscosity (?) when cold, 0 will be vicous when really cold and therefore get around the engine better then an oil with say 15w40.

I think lol

Yeah and the 40 is the viscosity when the oil is hot inside the engine apparently. I'm pretty clueless what all the figures mean to be honest lol. Just make sure I use the right grade and stick it in and hope for the best

makes no odds, as long as the second number is 40 or higher you're fine

the first number refers to the viscosity at 0degC

0W,5W,10W are ALL fine
