1.2 > 1.4 ?

  Clio 182 FF 2005
will a 1.4rt engine stick straight into a 1.2? would of thought it would go straight but ive got the mpi engine and the 1.4's are spi aint they? or are there diff 1.4's? before you say whats the point etc, im 17 and dont have the money for a valver conversion or of that sort and the insurance. plus if i dont change my insurance and jus say i bought it like this im not a mechanic etc ill get away with it, and i figured 1.4 into a 1.2 is practically hassle free and u can get the engines for quit cheap and i can do the work myself - searched the forums and it appears no1 has done this before or have they? well feedback would be nice, thanks!

bit of a mission i reckon. why not save up and wait till ur a bit older and get a 1.8 engine fitted :)

better still strip ur car, get lightweight alloys, bucket seats, coilovers, make it a nice little track 1.2

i dont know much about engine conversions mate...but be VERY carefull doing something as major as an engine transplant and not telling the insurance as if they find out theyll have your pants round your ankles before youve even had time to reach for the vaseline.

you could in theory tell them that you havent done the engine conversion, but is it not possible they could contact the previous owner and ask them? after all what reason would they have to lie about doing a conversion?

If you cannot afford the insurance why are you doing this? Insurance on a 1.4 is more for you (or ayone) as its higher risk.
A 1.4 might be a few more hp but if you get a bad one then it won't be any quicker than a bad one.
If you want my advice and want maximum power for your money rebuild a 1.2 new bearings etc my mate rebuilt his old Nova 1.2 engine runs great now more powerful than other 1.4 Novas as its not had years of wear and abuse. No need to lie to insuance companies.

If you want to do a 1.4 well the parts should be easy you'll need the mounts etc wiring shouldn't be to bad as there only simple you'll need the ECU as well and if its a phase 2 car the engine from you'll need the keys as phase 2 from memory have imobilisers.

I'm not totally sure tbh mate. If you had the 1.2 Spi energy engine it would be a straight swap as they are ientical other than a larger bore pretty much, but I don't know if the DIET engine (that you have) will use the same mounts etc. It shouldn't be too difficult though as you could just swap anything you need other than the engine from a 1.4 clio.

bye the time ive saved up for a faster car ill be married with children and wont be allowed to have one, gotta have fun while i can lol, and ye i spose i shall just tell the insurance im putting a 1.4 and get insured with that, or i could always just sell mine and buy a 1.4 mite be a bit easier, but tbh really im just after the mechanical experience

Whats the point really? Your swapping1 slow engine for a slightly less slow one, I'd be aptient mate! Sort out suspension and brakes first!

already done mate, got fk konigsport coiloivers, and brought new disc and calipers coz needed for mot, but seems to be powerful enough. and what u said about working your way up i have been doing fitted the suspension and brakes myself with a hand from my dad (lol) and airfilter, decat n backbox also done a bit of styling and got some buckets and jazzed the interior up a bit dont ask why on a 1.2 bit of a waste of money but i like personalising things.

Buying a cheap 1.8 16V engine and rebuilt it since its not in your car you can learn as you go along and then put it in the car when you can afford to insure it that way. A well rebuilt 1.8 woul;d be quicker than many Williams as age and wear take there tole on power.

£100 or so.
You can buy a whole 1.8 16V for £250 sometime if its no MOT just need somwhere to store it whilst you either strip it for a transplant later or fix it.

Best get reading the Haynes books and every other book you can get your hands on.

Aye, as you said it'll be more involved as you got a MPI 1.2 and all mk1 1.4s are SPI...still easy enough tho - you'll need;

- engine,
- ecu plus ecu cage,
- loom,
- coilpack,
- 1.4/1.2 SPI downpipe and manifold etc,
- 1.4/1.2 SPI top engine mount,
+ obviously all the pipes for coolant etc

A good swap and an easy way to gain 20bhp.

As for not telling the insurance, well i'm as dodgy as the next person and i wouldn't do it as the lumps are radically different to look at. You could go down to getting 1.2 tags for the 1.4 engine but its really not worth thr hassle really....just tell them as 1.4s are only 1 or 2 groups more so won't break the bank.

Buy an RT mate and put your brakes and coilies etc on the new one, should be a peice of piss if uve done it before!
