1.2 16v => 172 Conversion

  Mondeo STTDCI

What would it entail? How much for the engine? Brake conversion? Time? Labour?

Informed comments only please

Depends if you consider a 172 engine and brakes a full conversion.

I saw a wrote off Clio Cup (850miles on the clock) with bits of its engine and a working gearbox. Total price for whole car was £500...If you look around theres bargains to be had.

The salvage yard said once a particular amount of damage was done to the car, ie not much could be salvaged the cars are set at £500. Im going there soon to see what bits i can nab, ideally any intact wheels and the Cup spoiler, which would total over £500. One advantage is they had no idea the Cup was even a sporty model, they said £50 per wheel! Sweet!

Damn...this is a tricky situation..i dont want to tell you, but i want to know the yard near you :) Worried ill post the yard and ill get beaten to it before i save up the reddies :cry:

ppl please. I know I could pick up a scrapper for nothing i just wanna know what the costs and labour involved would be. Obviously EVERYTHING would need to change - greabox, clutch etc etc

Thing is if you want brand new stuff it will cost a ton. Youll have to get the old yellow pages out and phone all the salvage yards. Also check cliospares.co.uk. Phone ren specialists, or torsion tuning for fitting advice.

Not bothered about it being "new". would like the engine to have done few miles obviously and I just found a minter for nothing just been in ahedge thats all but wanted to know a cost of conversion

would you need a different fuel pump too? would be quite a big job, prob easier to part x. but then no fun in that is there! especially if you have already put loads of hours on your motor, e.i. sound proofin, stereo, etc.

been looking on some salvage sites, haveny found any 172s yet but found some 2001 1.2 dynamiques and some 1.9 deisels, they go for about £1750 for the whole car, i would imagine 172 stuff is dearer and more popular, thus i cant find any yet! But i dont reckon it would be that much to get just the bits you need, you may have to go and take em out yourself to save yourself some money though. I was thinkin of building a space frame, and sitting an engine in that, doesnt have to be a clio engine, but i could make it look like a clio on the outside. course it would be for track only.

How about doing something completly different and drop a diesel in there? Renault do a 1.9 liter 130hp model which should give about 160 with a chip or a 2.2 liter which is 150hp or 180hp with a chip. Imagine all the extra torque (about twice i guess) the 6th gear and the fuel economy let alone being able to annoy 172 drivers and still get twice the mpg.

Would weight more I wreckon about another 20kg for the 1.9 from the megan specs.

May be cheaper to buy as most people wouldnt buy a diesel to transplant into there motor.

would have to completely replace fuel tank etc. wouldnt you though? or can you flush it out somehow. They are turbo as well, would a new ( bigger) turbo do anything to a deisel car? not sure how they work. you can add a dump valve to one though! ha ha that would be cool. Go crusin twice as often!
