1.2 16v engine swaps/conversions

Just to try and get all the info and opinion on this subject into one thread, what do people think is the best option for getting more power from the 1.2 16v? (presuming in this case that selling the car and buying a 172 etc is not an option).

Seems to be a toss-up between this rumoured K-tec turbo conversion, a GTT conversion, or is it possible to get a valver lump dropped in?

The turbo isnt simply a rumour..i was told face to face. I think someone is planning an R5 conversion. At the end of the day it requires some crazyness to decided to spend thousands tuning a 1.2 instead.

Fred has proven (presuming he had 75bhp to start) he has got an 11bhp gain with a filter and exhaust. There is obviously scope to have a de-cat (or a sports cat which may be released by k-tec) plus a manifold..so were talking 15bhp.

With 4 valves per cyl ballpark would be 10%-15% gain if you got someone decent to do the headwork. (11bhp)

I wont guess on the rest as i just have no idea, but you could machine the throttle body (or get individuals), gasflow, mess with the inlet and exhaust valves, new cam, plus of course a chip to sort it all out, even re-bore the engine ..but that wouldnt make it a 1.1 anymore which takes away the fun IMO! However if you throw enough money you could see 100bhp easy..but lets face it 100bhp is still pretty lame.

Youd have to get the turbo..which would see you another 30-40..whatever BHP depending on how soon you want to kill the engine. But if anyones got the balls why wouldnt you get 150bhp?? And the power to weight must be similar to a 172 then...

However you could just copy somebody and get an R5 engine where the hardwork is pretty much done..but at least you could say you have a 1.1 with 150bhp LOL..

go down the R5 GTT route, its definitely the most cost effective and probably the most powerful depending on how much you wanna throw at it

You guys should contact Torsion Tuning. When I was thinking of having my old 1.2 16v converted to a GTT engine they could do it for £2000 all in and the engine he found for me had about 48k on the clock. However, I decided to go for a Cup as I had just got a new job etc...

They even have GTT demo cars at there place so why not pop down there and try them out. I would!

you can apparently still buy a new r5 engine, with no turbo etc from renault. cost around £600 so iv been told.

i wouldnt stick a gtt or a valver lump in a new clio as it will cost you money and probably devalue the car quite a bit.carry out the mods avaliable like exhausts etc and start saving for something faster if i was you.

Best value would be a Williams/ 16V in my opinion. The 16V engines are quite cheap and 137hp stock which is better than a stock GTT sure you can turn the boost up on the GTT but for how lon will it stay there without modification.

The other engines possible are the 172 which would be slightly more than a 16V ( £1k possible for a low milage one) but more power and even more reliable. The GTT is the more opvious choice but as people say you need to spend £ getting power from them.

What about a 1.6 16V engine.

What about a turbo diesel the 1.9 should fit 80hp verions and 100hp version out there. With a little messing about for a couple of quid you could be pshing 130hp with £500 of bits 140~150hp is not unreasonable. Plus it would get better MPG so be cheaper to run

Dropping any of these into a Clio should cost about £1k

There is a turbo 1.2 kit comming with ~120hp I heard but value for money it will be very low its will cost you about £3k fitted and the box isnt that strong so you may have to be easy whereas a 16V enigine would be better. Mods to a small engine for HP gains arnt worth it best get the biggest CC enigine possible or one with a turbo for most hp.

However a 1.2 with 130hp would be quicker I guess round a track due to a lighter front end.

Other possibilities are a motobike engien there smal, and powerful although you do have to rev them more. Or a n other small enigne may be better ie a VAG 1.8T engine from a TT will get ~270 with a remap alone.

Problem installed a motobike or other manurfactureres engine is the instal you need custom mounts but it may work out cheaper as tunning for some enigines is cheap ie VAG due to there polularity

yeah i saw a twin motor bike engined mini a while back, power through the rear wheels, he said it cost £32k to build and £3.5k a year to insure! never seen anything quite slide round corners like that though.

i would like to see a 1.2 turbo! if i replaced the engine in mine then i would probably go to working on the old 1.2 engine and try and turbo it DIY style.

the amount of money it will cost to do the conversion and the amount it would devalue the car surely its not worth it.you would need all the wiring looms(inc dash loom) and all the immobiliser parts(uch for example) to carry out an engine swap using these new engines.you would also need the obvious things like exhaust,fuel pipes and mounts/brackets etc.its the cost of the other things other than the engine that will bump up the cost.

starting saving liam if i was you and it wont be that long before you will be able to afford something faster.doing a major conversion on your new clio will be a waste of your money in the end.

yep, very expensive toys. the renault 5gtt is probably the best conversion to do i think if you want turbo. i cant actually justify having a car faster than my 1.2, i mean what do i need it for? getting to work faster? why would i want to do that! lol

the price of mk1 172s have come down so much lately, i think they are a good choice on a budget.
