1.2 Clio starting problem

Don

  182 & LY Clio 220 ed
Took the 1.2 apart to clean the Throttle body. Put it back together and connected everything...now the fucker won't start. Tries and fails miserably.

The beep part way through is the Clifford immobiliser...it does that and was on the car before Mandy bought it!

Any ideas?????

Cheers Edde :)

It seems to be deactivating and the lights on dash appear as they normally would. Called Green Flag bloke and he said it seems like the engine is locking, so suggested it could be that there is too much petrol in there, but didn't have a small enough socket to fit in the gap to remove spark plugs. (Suggested hydraulic issue?!?)

It has a Clifford alarm on there (previous owner), and that has been deactivated (or so it would seem), but just won't turn over. I've looked at the connections and all appear to be in order. I would have removed and reseated everything, but with the light fading fast, I didn't get chance.

Green Flag bloke tried his own charger on the battery and still did the same, so it wasn't trying to take too much power from it (it had enough juice in the battery to do it) and there was no change.

Its bloody frustrating the hell outta me! :(

Don,

Can you turn it by hand? I'm guessing you won't be able to but am trying to be optermistic.

No mate, appears to be locked when putting it in 1st and trying to move the car!

The car moves a few inches, then stops dead! Could well be petrol in the cylinder stopping it from moving. :(

it would need to be a fair bit to hydrolock a 1.2 16v though matey. Are you sure you only removed the inlet and that nothing entered the ports when you had the plastics off?

Would definitely be worth getting the spark plugs out and looking down into the cylinders to have a look.

I only took the inlet off and cleaned the TB, I am almost certain I dropped nothing in there...but am bricking it now.

I removed the TB (unscrewed it) so I could clean both sides and reattached it making sure everything was on there.

I'm gonna get a local garage to have a look in the morning, as I will struggle to see something tomorrow morning before I start work.

Would definitely be worth getting the spark plugs out and looking down into the cylinders to have a look.

It might not be hydraulic, as the lad from the local firm who Green Flag summoned only had charger and toolkit, he was going to check under the spark plugs, but he didn't have a tool small enough (narrow) to remove the spark plug...so will see what message comes back...and how much its gonna cost me. I always said that I hated the 1.2s, but this has cemented it! Mick, if you weren't so far away, I'd be giving you a shout on this one!

So the mobile technician didn't have the tools for the job! (typical) :(

You wouldn't believe how many mobile guys don't have tools to remove plugs on these engines mate... seriously small units.

Did you do anything else at all? Whatever you do, stop turning it over by key! Damage (if any) has been done now but lets limit any further, expensive jobs being created.

I can imagine...problem is that they have so many different units to work on, there's no chance they'd have 100% of the right tools.

I haven't done anything apart from trying to turn it over a couple of times and testing whether it was moving through being pushed. I'm just worried about the bill, the missus asked me to look at it, but I have no clue with that engine. Only done general stuff, hadn't had the intake off before, don't think I will again! ;)

Why couldn't the TB be on the side of the unit like it is on the F4R? (much easier to deal with!)

Thanks for your input though Mick, its appreciated. :)

Okay, to ask a silly question...

... what was it doing to warrant removal of the throttle body?

The symptoms your video show bring me to the following conclusion; Timing slipped or foreign object damage obstructing valve/piston clearance.

Bill shouldn't be massive even if worst case you've pegged a valve or four. These engines go for £200 complete so fret not and its a simple lump to work on even on a driveway. If i wasn't so busy i'd come over and scare it in to working for you again.

Her car kept doing the engine management light and 'coughing' a couple of times before stalling. (Similar to Tim Lockhart's issue on his GF's car). I've already done TDC sensor (no change), so thought it could be the TB having issues...hence taking it off to clean both sides and putting it back on.

Mick, don't worry mate...its my f**k up...so I'm paying. The lad who'll be looking at it I've known him and his family for years and their reputation is very good. If engine is knackered she will never let me live it down! So hopefully its just something silly. (fingers crossed!)

Yes mate...

Garage has said that they think something is stuck in there, but is going to be a head off job...:(

Thats not good. Do you know where they think it is stuck? If they think it's in the bore, to save some time and money, it would be a good idea to get a bore camera in there and check it out. Should be able to look at the valves as well. Would just maybe shed some light on the possibilities before they go and pull the head off.

I know mate...just glad its not the 182! He hasn't said as I was in work when he called me to give me an update so I tried to get the information as quick as possible. I will just see what comes of it, and then the 1.2 is never being touched again by me! (but don't tell the missus!)

Haha! If it worked before, it can't be anything too serious surely! (All your tools make it back into your toolbox?;)

If you lived slightly closer I would offer to help you sort it, used to have one myself

All tools went back in without a problem. It is probably something and nothing. Just infuriating that if I don't get it sorted...she will get the 182 until her car is on the road! (don't want that!) ;)

Thanks for the offer :)

I know it has been some time... but what was the cause of the problem you experienced?

It was user error!

Mixed 2 connections up and ended up puttin fuel line on the wrong connection, so ballsed it up! :(

All sorted now though...

I guess you mixed up the fuel feed and the purge valve conection? Very lucky it didnt go up with a bang tbh!
