1.4 or 1.6 Dynamic

Hi there Guys

My first post, so take it easy on me! ;)

Firstly, I hope you all had a great Christmas and got all you wanted :)

I currently have a HGT 1.8 16v Punto (MK2) with 130bhp, which I love very much lol, however being only 21 (almost) the insurance is really high (group 14) and I've just brought an apartment so need to look at saving some cash!

So I'm looking to possibly sell up and purchase a Clio. I was looking at the 1.6 dynamic, but a dealer suggested maybe looking at a 1.4 and there is not a huge difference, about 1 second 0-60, the fuel economy is a little better and is about £100 cheaper to insure.

Basically I'm just after some people's thoughts on this. Personally I'm thinking of the 1.6 as I don't want a huge drop from what I'm use too. Also do you guys have any advice on things to look out for when buying a used Clio. I'm looking at about an 03 reg.

Thanks in advance!

Tom

would you not consider a diesel?
TBH, in a word, no. LOL

I don't really do the miles to make it worth owning (I don't think), someone once told me you had to do about 18,000 (ish) a year to make it worth it (as the servicing is more, fuel is more etc etc), and I'll probably only do about 8,000. I'm not too keen on diesels either.

you'd be surprised how quick the diesels are, the DCi 100 has the same torque as the 172, yet is a group 5 insurance iirc. If your downgrading to save cash dont go for the 1.6 as its a pointless exercise as u'll be paying pretty much the same as your HGT's worth i should imagine (they're rare). Also fuel etc will be the same as the HGT. Go for the 1.4

Thanks for your comments. Very interesting.

What is the difference between a Dynamic and a Dynamic +??? Apart from 2 insurance groups, EAK!

The 1.6 Dynamic is insurance group 8, which is quite a bit cheaper to insure, and granted the 1.4 Dynamic is group 5 :)

I think the Tax groups are the same...

Yeah, my HGT will pay for the Clio, but that’s that. No change :(

Thanks again for your thoughts!

the dynamique + has a couple of very minor extras, which are worth bothering with tbh (dont ask me what theya re cos i dont know lol)

I wouldn't exect anything less!

There are many more 1.4's out there, your not wrong... Give me something to do tomorrow, go shopping :)

Thanks for all your help!

  1.2 16v Dynamique.
why not go for a 1.2 16v dynamique like mine? you will be surprised at how nippy they are not to mention how much cheaper the insurance will be!

I use to have a 1.2 Punto so I know where your coming from. The insurance would be great yeah, but I drove a 1.2 punto a few weeks ago when mine was in for a service and it was just too slow lol. I should have gone for a 1.4 punto rather than the HGT, then I wouldn't be in the predicament. ROFL

Also the 1.4 is easier to find for a dealership the 1.6 are very rare they sold more 172's than 1.6 the 1.4 was more popular.
Fuel economy is the same. Depends hwo you drive.

Fuel costs abut 5% more but you burn 60% of the volume so you'll save about 40% of your bill every time you fill up so your always on a winner.

Servicing for the diesel is cheaper no stupid plugs no coils to fail no throttle bodies to fail plus they have the stronger JC3 boxs.

Most places charge the same price to service diesel or petrol but if your DIYing then its cheaper to go diesel

Based on going 100 miles a petrol at 35mpg (about normal) costs £11.04

Diesel at 55mpg costs £7.85

Or just over 3p a mile saving

Road funds £50 vs £120 or so for the petrols.

They cost more to buy though say £300 maybe more and worth say £200 more at resale.

At 8k a year in fuel alone its about £250 saving plus £70 for road fund plus insurance is often lower.

Each to there own just though I should give you a true and fair indiction.

Dynamic plus had air con as standard plus electric sunroof plus the 1.6's all had alarms as standard and the dynamics plus all did. CD player as standard along allmost all were upgraded to cd player from new anyway.
