1.4 rt timing ?

What kind of problems would my car experience if the timing was out, apart from the obvious bent valves, damaged pistons etc, it is drivable but i suspect that the timing is slightly out after a home repair job !!! I will divulge more later, when i get some replies to this intial question, i dont want people to be initailly infuenced if i was to say what i tried to fix,

bent valves mainly, lack of compression will show this.
