1.6 16v engine mods.

Car  E36 M3. 182
has anyone tuned the 1.6 16v (pre vvc) engine, and what results did they get from which mods?? im just trying to decide where to spend my money for more performance. i know there probably isnt much to be had and id be better doing up the suspension, but id also like to know if any gains can be made from the engine, i mean 110 hp from a 1.6 16v doesnt seem like a massive amount compared to saxos/106's. surely theres more to be had??

what is the limiting factor?? i know that saxos get more revs but is there any reason why our engines cant?? has anyone taken these engines particularly far power-wise?

The race 1600 cars get a fair bit 200hp or so I think but thats a race car with race car running problems (ie cost reliability etc).

Best idea if you want more power is to stick a 172 engine etc in £2k for the parts plus new clucth etc.

There are bits out there for the 1.6 manifold work can be done cams are out there then remap exhaust decat etc.

The other manurfactuers engine are built differently.

I have a SS de-cat (not fitted yet) looking at a throttle body from a 2.0 laguna (F4R 780)
and have thought about cams but they are way too expensive!!! And my car struggles to idle cold as it is.. lol

so say i was to fit a manifold and exhaust system, panel filter and get the inlet/exhaust ports matched, how much power would i be seeing, assuming i got a re-map to suit the mods?

hey andy, thought you were getting your de- cat on the other day. got my downpipe done in the end, just took a bit of persuasion to drop the subframe.

if your doing the porst your as well doing the cams while engine is in bits!

if you add cams to that list you'll possibly see 130bhp at a guess.

but to be honest add up the cost of what you named above.. matt_black will do you all you need for 172 conversion for 2k...

i have bee round and round this in my head, i decided not to mod the engine! lol
i got coilovers n stuff instead! :)

Thats down to poor mapping even with high lift cams an engine should idle fine. There a few hightly tunneed Clio owners on here who's cars idle fine.

mmm.... bin lookin at mk 1 172's, some goin around 5k. 3.5k for sellin mine, probly be best savin the 1.5k and just buy a 172 and be done with it!!!
the downpipes actually quite easy once you know what youre doin. cant believe a garage wanted 300 sheets to do mine!!!! mite do the suspension in the meantime tho!!

probably because they didn't want to do it at all! so they gave you a random figure that the guy coungered up during his mid morning sh!t break!

You can pick them up for even less than that if you look round.

There a few on the trader for under £4k there even one phase 1 model and a phase 1 with 84k for £3.3k or one with 110k from a trader for £3k.

mmm. 150 quid for 11 bolts..... whatever!!
you gettin yours rollin roaded after the mods??
ill have to start ringin round for insurance quotes!!!!

decat, catback, throttle body from 2.0 F4R (non renaultsport engine), cams, panel filter, remap.

you can always go for lightened and balanced bottom end, headwork etc ill leave it up to you to decide if its worth it or not. i looked into the 1.6 conversion but realised its not much faster than what ive got to be honest (considering mine is a fast one, yet to find another 1.2 16v that mine cant actually pull on)

I have it now at measured 133bhp and 178Nm...but cost me a lot....

so thats a cold air feed, bigger throttle body, new plugs, remap, cams, full exhaust inc sport cat and a better fuel pump. for 20 hp and a 30nm of torque...... sounds good to me.

I think with more professional remapping done on a dyno and not on my desktop and some work to the cylinder head and manifold (channels, compression ratio,...) 140-145hp at about 6500 rpm should be possible with this cam shafts.
You can clearly see, that over 6000rpm the torque drastically drops, so this is a sign that the restriction of the intake manifold and the channels is too big. I already thougt about using a RS intakemanifold but the cylinder distance between the K- and the F engines differs more than 10mm.

And I think the torque drops at 2500 rpm and 3300 rpm can be eliminated with a good calibration on the engine dyno.

By the way for me this is plus of 26bhp because in germany the engine is specified with 107hp (79kW).... ;)
