1.8 16v into a 1.4

Hi guys

I thinking of buying a 1.4 1994 L reg clio and was wondering is it possible to fit the 1.8 16v engine and gear box into the 1.4.

i know it would be alot easier to just buy a 1.8 16v but insurance will kill me and at the moment i would be more than happy with the 1.4 but in the future the 1.8 could be fun.

Any comments would be most appreciated

cheers all

matt

Dont necessarily agree with selling and buying a valver.

I have a 1998 (last of the phase 3s) 1.4 clio which I have spent a fair bit on and am happy with.

If I sold it I would have to buy a much older/higher mileaged valver then start the mods all over again.

If you have uprated your suspension/brakes anyway (as I have) I think the transplant is a good option

You can pick up a decent valver engine for £300 and labour shouldnt be too much. (Think TT do it for £950 icluding the engine)

Then I will have a 16v phase 3 (which Renault never did) and a real street sleeper.

just my 2p worth

Yep Torsion Tuning do the conversion think basic labour is £450, then you need your 1.8 16v engine and box and lots of other bits and bobs, best bet is to find a 1.8 16v owner who is having a GTT conversion then you will get everything you need.

Would you not be better off just getting a GTT conversion, more fun be turbod and all that..

.. true, but more expensive, youll need a donor car + around a grand, whearas you can have the 1.8 16v engine for under £1k. Its 137bhp as well whearas the GTT is 110/118 (phs1/2). I know modding the GTT will give you more power for your pound but I guess the 16v engine is a bit more reliable and will give a smoother power delivery than the turbo.. Boost kicking in whilst your going round a corner/roundabout, ouch!

Erm, I thought there was more modding opportunity with a GT Turbo lump. You cant exactly whack up the boost on a 16V after a few select mods!

People always ask if they can do an engine transplant and the answer is always yes. But it will not be as cheap, long or short run, as just buying a 16V. The 16V wasnt just a regular Clio with bigger brakes, arches, bumpers and engine. Theres also the four-bar rear torsion system, rear discs, beefier anti-roll bars etc etc.

My mate has a Rover 216 Coupe that he has fitted a Honda Prelude 2.2 engine into. As standard they push out about 180bhp. He started by picking up a cheap engine and trying to fit it. In the end it cost well over £10,000 as he had to get a £3,000 ECU, shocks, brakes, etc. Its undoubtedly a unique and mega, mega fast car... but what else could he have bought if he knew it was going to cost £10k at the outset? Maybe three or four faster and more tuneable Rover 220 Turbo Coupes!!

Yeah the brakes on the RT are pish. I suppose your right about the price, you can pick up a 16v pretty cheap..

A cursory glance at my Adtrader says a decent early 16V can be had for £2,000. £3k seems to get a late reg one and going up to and through £4k or £5k will get you all youd ever want - a highly tuned minter, leather and F7R 2.0 conversions.

The F7R lump is the 2.0 lump from the Williams Clio, that later went on into the Megane Coupe afaik.

My insurance sompany have the 16V down as a Grp15, they can choose it i think, not always group 12. But then they were the cheapest for me so it cant make that much difference?!

weird.....the thread says he wants to turn a 1.8 16v in to a 1.4 !!!.......well thats what i thought when i first saw it....then i re-read it !!!

enjoy yer insurance quotes matt............when you start taking the original engine out & putting in a bigger one....they are usually more to insure than the car your trying to make !!

if yer get my drift !!

Thanx guys i think from what im reading that the 1.8 would be the more sensible option in the long run.

now all i have to do is find a decent 16v and let the fun begin.

cheers again

Matt

Most 16V drivers under 20 seem to get insured TPFT for under £1500 and once over 20 FC seems to be £500-£1000.
