I have a superchipped 16v that revs to 8000rpm and the usual induction and exhaust. Would I stand any chance against renault 5 turbo??? standard or otherwise
Bugger! ar well. I got my arse kicked by a r5 up to 60, but then he headed onto the motorway and eventaully I caught him up and slowly passed him?? probably not a turbo.
you might have a go at a standard one once you have managed to catch it up, there is no chance you could out accelerate one off the line, not a chance in hell
not many standard ones about though really
top end though you will beat it, but by that time the R5 owner would have probably backed off
I thought standard vs standard there pretty even got a couple of old test reviews and on the back roads they reconed the 16v would leave it. But straight line to 60 the 5 would slightly have it?
I think its possible to change something on your exsisting superchip. The place where I got it done asked if I wanted it done??? didnt cost anything. Mind you ABP motorsport are still sh*t, so dont go to them!!!
As for the r 5, the reason I wanted to know is that Im going to that liverpool cruise and theres a couple of turbos goin. Just wondering how Id fair.
They may be quick to about 80mph but then that about it. Plus a 16v can sit all day doin like 120mph, a 5 turbos head gasket will have gone after about like 2 minutes of that speed hehe. I mean they are only an old push rod engine at the end of the day. Not exactly made for high speeds. They are cool cars though. Id like a raider myself if i had some spare cash.
A 16v will beat a standard one to 60 then the 5 runs out of BHP. So in standard form u can beat every1 of them out there.
BRUN, my mate has a decent 5 which he runs at about 15psi (150bhp) & he has never EVER got in front of me before 60 mate. There on it motors though. High boost needs time to kick in on the standard turbos anyway, so a 5 wont beat a 16v to 60 unless it has a quick spool turbo or a good tuned engine.
Problem is that many 5s do have the kinda work im talkin about so ull probably get beat anyway. Turbos are easy to tune, but unreliable, but as u pine for a turbo car after getting beat remember that they are expensive to run & u must have a wod to keep it in good shape IMO. Plus no bus trips to work when u own a 16v.
I like the 5 turbos but like you said they are known for popping head gaskets. Paul, your 16v stripped out?? what did you take out??? notice a difference??
Never done a gaslet on mine, got a Group a on there and once ran 21 psi. Now have nos to and run a reilable 15 psi @ manifold. Only thing that has let me down is the thermastat temp switch broke and the fan didnt kick in once so had to hard wire it. But @ £13 its hardly a break the back part. Also the accel cable snapped.
There are pics somewhere on this page. Had 110 brake at the wheels running 10psi (at carb), now i run 17 (at carb) and have the nos. Dunno what to expect now. Ive beate every 5 turbo ive raced so far without nos on.
I cant wait to get my 5 on the road as give them a good comparison. I aint even driven the 5 yet. Unless you call sitting in the drivers seat steering whilst being towed.
i wasnt down s.end no. I still have a lot of things to do and a lot of plans. Im tryin to get it lookin respectable for augst bank hol weeken when i am supposed to be going anglesey car show.
Standard 0-62 according to Renault was indeed 8 secs for the later Phase2 GT Turbo and Raider (which had 5bhp more than the 115bhp Phase1).
The 0-62 for the 16v was officially 8 secs according to Renault, though the 0-60 drops by about half a second if youre hot becuase you have to change to 3rd to make 62 in the 16v.
But this is all very minor stuff and based on figures (which is no way to reach a firm conclusion!).
Ive never raced a GT Turbo, despite have come up to the lights with a few before. I wasnt going to race becuase I knew a GT Turbo was damn quick and I suspect the drivers of the GT Turbos were thinking the same thing about my Valver. We just nodded in respect to each others cars; the way it should be.
The 0-62 of 8sec is good for a gear change at 60, but the official 0-60 from Reno was 7.7 & the official 0-60 for a R5 was 8.
But like i said it dont make a difference in practice cause all R5s are tuned anyway. Personally i think Reno were a little egar to make the new Clio 16v when it came out in 92 appear faster than the R5 it was replacing. Sneeky sods.
