172/182 Vs 197

Dunno if this is correct section but here it goes.

Just a thought.

Would it be a close one between a 197 and a 172/182 all with same spec or same mods done.

Or would 197 kill the 172/182 ?

Were not talking 172/182 and 197 cups though.

And aint the 197 slightly slower on paper ?

Or is that bol**cks ? :S

There all close.I say that in frustration because nothing has really changed a great deal since the williams came out some near 15 years ago.

Im shocked to say there are variants of all models now but none and repeat none have really moved anything on in terms of performance and handling.
One maybe slightly better than the other when driven at 9/10ths but tbh its pretty poor for all this time

Isn't the 172/182 and 197's quicker than the williams though ?

Or only on top end ?

I think it's pretty good to have the choice - you can have the same sort of car in retro spec, mid spec, or comfort spec, and at a variety of price points ;)

I think the best thing to do is to search the forums D1CKY. There has already been a huge number of these kinds of discussions and there has never been a conclusive answer reached yet. As was said above, they're all pretty much even. The 182ff will be slightly quicker than a 172ff simply because of the power increase, while the 182/197 argument could (and probably will) go on until we all die of stress-related heart attacks because of all the arguing. IMO there's no appreciable difference in acceleration on the road, but if I could afford the lower mpg figures I'd swap my 182 for a 197 any day.

But none of them do anything more than compliment one area of the car.

Wheres a 220bhp clio turbo to move things on.

Almost every other manafacturer has moved on like the vxr range and even the focus with its volvo turbo unit.So why not renault

A 255ish bhp Megane and a 220ish bhp Clio. Hmmm... undisputed class leaders anyone? Well, the meg is anyway to be fair, it's just the clio that falls behind point-to-point compared to its rivals. Even the 180bhp Ibiza Cupra is quicker across country, so say Evo.

The should have made the 197 cup a proper cup because i can see there being very little differnce between the 179 cup and an r27 except that the R27 is speced a lot better.

Thats my point exactly.Give the whole range a kick up the backside and put reault where it should be

They should'nt be held back because the top hatch only has 225bhp.And then release 15 different variations to keep people coming back

Lazy buggers

Some people dont like turbos though. The 197 engine is a peach, much less gruff then the 182 lump. Yes its lacking in torque lower down the range, but its a screamer up to 7K+. I've had a 172 Cup 182, and now a 197. They are all around equal in straightline speed. Mechanical grip..... the 197 wins hands down, so much more stable. The MK3is a much more refined car, better build, less gruff etc. To say the game hanst moved on is silly tbh

I agree, the game has moved on. I'd swap my 182 for a 197 in a heartbeat if only I could afford one, because I've grown out of the 'manic hot-hatch' kind of age. But what it gains over the 182 in sheer ability it loses in that aggressive hot hatch feeling. Can't please everyone lol.
