172 Cup AP22 data

Anyone with a Cup got some AP22 data that I can look at please? Or anyone with a Cup near Sheffield want to pop out to the Dronfield bypass where there is a perfect section to do a couple of runs?

Cheers,

Rhys

Here are a few of the runs I have done. These are the best times, other times I screwed up gear changes or pulled off tractor starts. I am sure these can be improved upon by people who are better than me at launching the thing.

Cuppy - not got a PM off you...! I sent you one earlier but no reply.

AP22 is a little performance meter thing. You just stick it to the dash with some blutack and them accelerate and it times you. Got to do it on a really flat road. Theres a bit on the Dronfield bypass thats good to do some runs. Would like to compare to a Cup.

Ive got one run from someones Cup, and it doesnt seem any quicker than my MK1, so Id like to get a run using my AP22 unit.

Rhys

Edit - Oops. PM box was full. Can you send it again?

A few from my MK1 that I did last night. Unfortunately had passenger and shopping in car at the time. Probably wont make much difference, but Im going to pop out later by myself and have another crack and try getting up to 100 with it.

PS: my driving has been slated enough for people to know that someone who can do a run without "putting it in reverse" could probably improve on these times....

Got mine for £125 from adams_16v who bought it off ebay for a similar price. Seen ones on ebay going for £105, but for gods sake use a sniper tool or the bidding gets pushed right up. They take a fair bit of calibrating, by the way. Ive had to use a GPS unit to measure my speedo, then change the "tilt" setting on the AP22 to make it match the speedo. Taken me weeks to get it right. Oh yeah, also requires a totally FLAT piece of road to get accurate results.

Forget 0-60 as its too slow to get a proper guage of the cars performance...

You only use the 2 gears and the time is heavily affected by the start in a 0-60 run, so can you guys possibly do some 0-100 runs please?!

That will show how they really perform. ;)

Rich - as you probably know, you need a totally flat road to do AP22 runs. Precious few of those round Sheffield. My favourite one is 10 miles away and its an 8 mile round trip to get back to the start point again!

So, Im intending to do some 100s, but theres no point getting to 100 on a road that changes elevation during the run. It puts the AP22 waaaay out.

IMO 0-60 is a decent look at a traffic light GP type performance. The 172 is nearly a clear second ahead of my Williams by 60mph,. I know that the Willy (with decat and panel filter) does 100 in 18.5 seconds, so Im really hoping for somewhere in the low 17s or late 16s for the 172. Might have to pop out later and give it a try. Long way to go to smoke a clutch though!

Tried the 0-60 time again without a passenger, a bit less fuel and no cat litter/shopping and am very very pleased with the results. So much better than my 172 MK2 (which I am now even more sure was a duff one).

So you are saying Rhys that 0-100 run, down hill in mine was a bit out!

I see you are using my favorite bit of road, Its quite good as you could get a maximum of 8 runs!

Oakley - yes, hopelessly out! Its only good for one run with an AP22 on that bit of road. The very bottom bit heading towards chesterfield before the first turn off and at the bottom of the big long hill. However, it is the IDEAL AP22 testing area. Good surface, totally flat and good for over a ton before braking.

Looks like abbs_172 can make it tomorrow night if you fancy meeting up at the Bowshaw? Can you PM me your mobile phone number?

Yeah, I know mate and we really struggled to find a suitable stretch of raod when we went playing with an AP22.

I used to live in Sheffield too, so I know how hard it is to find a road like that! ;)

I think the AP is a great little gadget, good crack when the weather is nice, and youre bored and feel like a new clutch and some tyres...

My times in the Cup are with myself in it, so we can safely say that Rhys Mk1 is faster, as I noticed a huge difference with a passenger in it.

Have fun!

Thats odd. I went out again with just myself, less petrol and a better launch technique and while I did knock some time off the 0-60, it wasnt much (about 0.15 seconds off). Thought it might have been a fair bit quicker.

Haha! Says something about the size of my mate then! There was a good half a seconds difference when he jumped out. He wasnt impressed! Lol!

Have you found a good stretch of road to try yours out then? I finally did. Live in rural Northants, and found a long, flat stretch, with no crossing roads or farms, and good tarmac. Great fun. Ill have to go out and abuse the clutch now that you are on the case Rhys!:)

Ive got one road near me thats okay for 0-70mph, and another one thats fecking miles off but good for 0-100. Just trying to arrange a meet for tomorrow so should have some more data then (including a Cup or two I hope!)
