172 CUP... cranks but wont start :( Interesting 3 days of ownership....

  CLIO 172 CUP
Afternoon,

I've only owned my clio cup a matter of days and its decided to let me down....
The car cranks fine but the engine will not fire off.... my first point of call was the crank sensor as the previous owner appeared to of used a non genuine part so i chucked a proper renault one in and still not luck.
Being a BMW man i attempted to use Carly to read the codes however the single code its producing is rather "Generic".

"000000 - fault results from a generic communication issue in the ECU - Engine control module (internal GR92)"

I assume the next point of call would be CLIP diag ?

cheers
Alex

In the engine bay there is a fuse box on the passenger side wheel arch.. Inside there you will find a few relays and right underneath them is a big white plug.. That horrible plug likes to play silly buggers.. Unplug it, give all the inside a good clean with some contact cleaner and then a spray of some white Lithum grease.. also do the same with the relays and the holders.. This is what ive had to do to mine when i had a similar problem..

Yeh man got some tasty bits being put on :)
Clio question.... my electrical fault light is on the instrument cluster. The one that looks like a heart monitor. I assume that would be lit for the connection issues you described above ?

Ah i had that a couple week ago after i was bouncing off the limiter too much on track.. i cleared that by disconnecting the battery and left it for 5 mins and its been ok since.. Have you got it started yet?

No mate, been in the garage all evening on it.
It’s getting fuel... so the pump is priming and the immobiliser is ok. Tomorrow I’ll put a multi meter on the crank sensor to see if
It’s pulsing. It’s very much like there’s no spark. I wasn’t getting any voltage at the coil pack connector.

Worth checking the earth strap at the back of the gearbox underneath the air box isn’t loose. The car won’t start if it’s loose.

It will be related to the engine bay fusebox if the electrical fault light is on the dash. Check the small relay pins for corrosion, and check the fuse for the ecu. My fusebox melted on the ecu fuse due to poor connection causing a non start.

thanks mate, I’ll clean them all off with some contact cleaner and refit all off them :)

Check 5 amp fuse 3 and its 12v supply.

Check continuity to relay J

Bridge relay J

Check continuity of white wire from relay J to ECU pin 11.

My apologies, I wrote my original reply from memory, but have since revisited the subject.

I think this is a 172 cup fuse box, Relay J is the small brown one with a white blob on it.

I was in error, the white wire goes to Pin 10, not 11.

Release the 90 pin connector from the ECU by sliding the black top cover towards the wing, and then slide the locking arm to release the connector.( see picture )

Check the continuity with a multimeter, though you may need to use a sewing needle or similar get a contact, as the leads on most multimeters are a bit stubby.

Also 30 amp fuse 1, is the power supp[y to the relays, and 5 amp fuse 3 is the power supply to pin 30 of the ECU.

Afternoon All,

After checking for Spark & there was fuel getting to the fuel rail. thanks for Eddie for the recommendation of removing the injections... they weren't pumping :( appeared to have only 2-2.5 volts getting to the injectors which i can only assume isn't enough for them to even prime.

Anyway... i ended up bridging the relay below and the car runs perfectly. unfortunately i can't find any split wires etc... any further advice ? hoping to get it to a specialist end of the week after my trackday (and no its not in the clio :) )
