172 cup handling questions

  172cup & 182cup pk'd
Hello
Had my 172 cup for 12months now and since having it i've always felt like the handling ain't like it should be. The car drives straight, the tracking is fine, had the ball joints checked, dampers and bushes with only the ARB looking a bit worn.

When going over bumps, grooves, dips, breaks in the road the steering gets feed back from the road with the steering wheel jumping left to right a little. Not a major issue but you can tell something ain't quite right like as if a bush is worn or something. The steering also feels a bit uneasy at high speed can feel quite unsafe.

I know the car tramlines a little and i can accept this but this seems different and I was just wandering if the ARB could be causing the problems?

I was thinking of replacing them but are kind of thinking is it worth it just incase its not them.

Cheers
Griff

it's difficult to be able to tell without being able to compare really; the ones i've driven have all felt the same and have been very sensitive to road cambers etc.

your best bet is probably in trying to get along to a local meet or in asking a local indie specialist to have a drive and advise/put your mind at rest

As above. Mine does seem sensitive to cambers but there isnt any play. Only way to tell would be to drive another or let another owner have a go.

Have you checked top mounts and track rod ends?

Sounds exactly the same as mine and I've had the same concerns. Only had the car six months tho so I figured I was just getting used to it, especially as it's quite a bit lighter than my previous car so I was thinking that had a lot to do with how it felt to me.

I've checked out my suspension parts and everything checks out ok, well everything except the offside top mount which I think is due a change. I'm going to see how it behaves with new top mounts (compmotive solid) and once my turinis are refurbed their going to be shod with some newer/better quality rubber. After all that i'll see how it feels.

what condidtion are your tyres in and what tyres are you running? it's probably that especially if you're running contis!

i'm running a bit of negative camber and mine is fine, better than standard in fact and it's sitting lower on coilovers.

I havn't checked the top mounts - how would i check these?

The track rod ends have been checked and look okay, the anti-roll bar bushes look a bit worn and thought this may be the root cause

Tyres are F1 GD3 on front (Stamped made in Germany E? not Taiwan) and Toyo Proxes T1-S on the back with a few mm left before needing changing.

Anyone ever had worn ARB bushes on their cup? what effect does it have on the ride?

Cheers so far
