172 Cup (HK52 ZFH)

  172 Cup
Obviously your engine builder knows more as they have the bits, but when the engine was first build I'd hope it was bored to suit the new pistons?

So any used block that still runs should also be suitable to take to the first overbore size. Unless someone just honed it and fitted stock size pistons

I’m not sure if I’m honest but considering the reputation of the company that built it I wouldn’t be surprised. (I didn’t know about the reputation when buying the car) It looks like it was a tolerance issue that caused it to fail.

Before putting it back on the road you'll need new wheel bearings. The weight of the car will have shagged yours as the shafts aren't in

Looks spot on though. The soda blasted parts look minty

Thanks I’ll add those to the list! Haha. They’re probably past their best anyway. It really does transform the parts.

Little update on the 172 Cup.

fitted the new shocks over the last couple of weeks mainly because they were in the way. The original fronts were really bad so glad I did, have kept the original springs for now but it’s not like it’s going anywhere.

whilst I was there I removed the previous owners wax oil from the rear arches. Looks a lot better.

today I took a trip over to engine dynamics to collect what’s left of my engine and box. I’d of really liked to get this rebuilt but unfortunately I currently just can’t justify the expense. The current set up would need the block re-bored, new oversized pistons, another crank and new valve guides before anything else. This would quickly become more expensive than the actual car.

The plan moving forward is to try and find a replacement engine, Get all the maintenance parts done and put my cams into it. And just use it for weekend fun as originally intended. There doesn’t seem to be many engines for sale that aren’t 100’s of miles away so if anyone can recommend anyone that’s got a 1*2 engine around Essex please let me know.

for now I’ll slowly start cleaning up the parts I intend to re-use and go from there.

George Williams has two engines he may part with. Local in Essex aswell…

Did a few bits on the clio this week

fitted the power steering line kit, quite impressed with the quality! Made for easy installation without an engine.

I also decided to take apart the oil pump whilst cleaning up some of the ancillary stuff from the old engine. Impressive amount of bearing material!

collected the replacement engine tonight, I’ll post more on that later.

Collected the replacement engine last night off a local-ish chap.

The story goes that they’d brought a 182 to enter in a racing series ended up stripping the car and ultimately it never got built so the engine sat. Has had a fresh belt and dephaser, water pump, crank pulley and bolt.

it had a fairly new LUK clutch but changed that for the Valeo one that was fitted to my old engine.

Visited engine dynamics for some new gaskets and oil filter, also spoke to Andy about getting the ECU mapped for the standard engine. Once I get the car running I’ll drop the ECU off to him.

got it fitted in the car, unfortunately light faded before I was able to try and start it up.
still need to fill it up with coolant and power steering fluid. And a few other jobs overall pretty happy with the progress.

Another day on the clio today…

managed to get everything connected up, driveshafts fitted. Fired up pretty much straight away.

Was hunting quite a bit but to be expected with the extreme map on it. Being a standard engine.

after filling the gearbox, coolant and power steering fluid. I drove it up the road and gave it a quick wash.

First wash in three months! Definitely looks better for it.

fitted the front bumper, correctly this time as half the fixings were missing.

All back together, few small jobs to finish. Hopefully I’ll have enough time to drop the ECU off at engine dynamics next week. That should get it running better.

Dropped the Clio’s ECU over to engine dynamics, any got the new map loaded and tweaked whilst I waited. The car now has a “stage 1” map on it, to suit the modifications that are left (only really the sports cat and exhaust)

got the car starting first turn but the engine was running a little rough under load, got some new spark plugs and that had it running perfectly.

attached all the engine bay stuff in place permanently, Looks a lot cleaner. Still a few bits I’d like to do but I’d like to use it a bit first.

was good to finally drive the car again.

Well it didn’t all go so swimmingly…

after doing 100miles in the clio I got the tracking done, wasn’t too far out but had it adjusted anyway.

I was out when the car unfortunately lost power and the amber heart rate monitor came on. Not ideal! Awaited the AA (it got dark rather quickly)
Long story short the lambda sensor wiring had got trapped and was earthing on the car! This meant the 30amp fuse for the ignition kept blowing.

136D6F0C-BDC4-432D-A041-D976525E3409.jpeg

got around 10 miles after switching the fuse, then had to get the car towed home. Fixed the wiring and replaced the sleeving. Worked fine.

however the car still wasn’t running quite right, tracked it down to one of the HT leads arcing on the block. They were terrible HT leads that were fitted when I got the car, trip to engine dynamics had a high quality set of replacements.

much better quality!

Replaced a few little bits from RPF whilst I was there, new oil cap, new bonnet switch and a new battery and new batteries in the keys.

went to the pub with a friend car started fine, drove the car 20 minutes without any problems. Come out of the pub and the Clio wouldn’t start!

red immobiliser light on the dashboard… wouldn’t crank, alarm kept going off. Tried every ‘trick’ to reset it even got the spare key from home. Nothing was working… called the AA and they said they’d be there in the next 4 hours!
Tried everything over again and just when I was about to give up and set fire to it, it actually started! Left it over night wouldn’t start this morning. Got it running eventually! Went and got some new fuses and some contact cleaner, cleaned every fuse behind the headlight and still didn’t want to know, Would start intermittently then wouldn’t. I’ve ordered two new relays and a new gearbox to body earth strap hoping that works.

very frustrating!

My old BG 182 did this for a year. Started fine, then parked it up and then wouldn’t start. Did 3,000 trouble free miles, then one cold winters evening coming out of work, wouldn’t crank. Changed TDC, starter motor, switched UCH, ECU, got an auto electrician out to remove the immobiliser part of the alarm. Just about to burn it, then decided to go over everything properly. Turned out to be a break in the wire running to the starter. There was also a hairline crack in the fuse coming off the battery. Anyway, I removed the loom, did a proper repair and replaced the factory fuse with a mega fuse and had 4 years trouble free motoring.

it’s a very frustrating fault, not to mention embarrassing when your car won’t start. After reading years of people having the same fault it looks like this is the only solution to fully fix it. I’ll have to look at the look at some point

After having the red immobiliser light on for a few days I decided to tackle the problem!

1C572DF6-C033-4926-8B67-CCE8D8977A10.jpeg

Tried every combination of locking and unlocking, holding the button and turning the key and other things. Cleaned all the connections in the fuse box changed the fuses and nothing…

ironic 666…. Haha

Changed the two black relays I believe ones fuel pump and the other ignition, then changed the earth strap

after this it’s started first time every time! Done 130 miles since and it’s worked fine.

Done a 100 or so miles and it’s been great! Got some millers oil to replace the cheap oil I put in to get it running.

Excellent work. Car coming on well. The refurbed wheels will make a big difference. Did mine last year.

Can I ask what brand Engine Mounts did you go for?

Thanks, looking forward to getting them back on the car.

I went for quinton hazell ones, seemed good value compared with Renault OE and heard good things.

If you can be arsed to do it. ceramic coat the wheels, it makes them so much easier to clean.

Did a job I’d been meaning to do for a while, removed the bonnet sound deadening and gave it a clean. Also changed the cheap oil to some Millers race stuff.

Got the wheels back, coated them in gtechniq c5 wheel amour. They came out great! Stripped, powder coated inside and out.

Have a slight suspension noise at slow speeds and the radio has stopped working so I’ll look into that next!

Looks fantastic.

What's the sound deadening replacement you have used on the bulkhead

Not done much with the cup lately, found the source of the suspension noise. Collapsed top bearing, think I was a little enthusiastic with the torque gun!

I still have a lot of plans for the car but a new job means these are mostly currently on hold unfortunately.

I've just looked through this for the first time. Lovely car and credit to you for taking such good care of it.
Thank you!

Figured I’d finish the story of the car (with me anyway)

IMG_2023-04-30-16-47-15-961.jpeg

I actually sold the car around six months ago, I’d started a new job over an hour away and had the opportunity to buy one of my dream cars so this had to go. It’s since had two owners the guy I sold it to sold it on.

would love another more track focused 172/182 at some point.
