172 Cup Oil Leak

difficult to tell without a bit more info. Cant you take the car to Renault for a check under warranty? If youve modified it and youd rather check yourself, I can give you a few tips on where to look. Let me know

ok, so Im assuming its been modified:

Id work top to bottom and check for oil leaks.

First have a look in the inlet pipe that sits between the airbox and Throttle body. There is a pipe that connects into that and for the cranckase breather. If you have a problem with blowby (damaged piston rings), you may have a fair amount of oil in your airfilter. If that happens you would also have white smoke when you accelerate hard sometimes, as you are burning oil.

If thats not the case, fine. Trace the cranckase breather pipe with your fingers. It runs under the distribution coil behind the engine. check if you have a lot of oil down there. If yes, that may also point to a blowby problem and the crankcase being pressurised

if not, have a look behind teh engine above the exhaust manifold. I have seen 3 cases so far of one of the manifold retaining bolts simply popping out of place and it must feed staright through to the engine because in all 3 cases a fair amount of oil was oozing from there at idling.

If not, have a look at the various engine seals etc and finally look under the car. A bit fo detective work can help.

Also, fill up the oil, and check what volume of oil you lose in normal driving and see if it increases at higher revs etc.

have fun..

I steam cleaned it last week to enable me to see...

to no avail. It seems to be coming from the back of the engine, where the rocker cover meets the block?

?

Have you checked the sump plug is tightened up ? Has the oil meter given you a warning of low engine oil ?

tight as ever.

I had oil in mine mate, it looked like it was from the filter (reno changed it under warranty for me).

but the tech said it might also be coming from the oil level sensor.

I too was only losing very little.

if its coming from behind the engine, have a look at the cranckase breather pipe, immediately below the induction coils.

look down the front of the engine near the alternator. there is a pressure switch screwed into the pas oil pipe. have a look at that because there commen for leaking in fact mine leaks i just cant be arsed to change it.
