172 Cup or 182

  Punto GT
hello clio forumers!

right, lil story for you...im selling my punto gt & getting a clio but...at the moment im unsure whar to get.

my miss's has had her 172 cup for a good 4 years now & i love it to bits at one point i was aiming to buy it off her, but got my gt instead.

anyway, im getting clio...

but here are my pros & cons & would like you guys to sway my verdict.

please bare in mind, i have enough money to get a cup or 182...obviously id choose a trophy all day long, but its the credit crunch & im not that flush at the moment!

172 cup.

pros: lightweight, turinis as standard, 172 cup badges on the door pillers (basicly says "kiss my arse, i got the cup model", ment to be the fastest clio other than the trophy

cons: NO ABS - that is the only problem i have!!!!!

182.

pros: air con, cruise control, half leathers, twin pipes, xenons

cons: heavy due to the mod coms, 16 inchers that are very heavy compaired to the cup wheels, there everywhere & are very commen compaired to the cup.

right, thats all i have to say on the matter...

please help me out...cheers!

no one can make the decision but you bud! but if it were me, id get the 182, simply cos your oh has a cup.....then you get the best of both worlds, having both between you

I'd say get a 182 if your mrs' already has a cup. Best of both worlds that way. Weekend drive with the cup, and then get a 182 for your toys on your daily drive in the week. That's what I would do anyway.

The cup isn't any quicker than the other RS's in the real world, you're talking a few tenths quicker to 60 and you're never going to notice that.

The cup feels rawer and the main reason I went for the cup was on the basis of "less equipment less to go wrong".

yes i agree with that!

cheers

i see what you other guys are saying, best of both worlds...hmmmm

food for thought!!!

cheers guys, i have a feeling most people will say 182 due to the best of both fact!

you would have to be a really good driver to notice any difference between the two. To the average driver they are the same car, minus ABS on the cup!!

I'd drive both and go from there. As a side issue, the ph1 has leather, AC etc, but keeps ABS and weighs pretty much the same as a cup IIRC. Of course you have a pretty average dash design to put up with, and they are older.

yeah, i done some research & found that to be true.

but, its just a lil bit to old for me now & the cup and 182s will be more disareble (sp) in the future to sell on.

to be fair, phase 1s are all ready looking dated there @ the stage where there not ol' skool like there valvers/williams but there still getting on a bit.

I could absolutely not be @rsed with a cup, but thats just me. I drive my car on the road only and wouldn't drive it in a way that I would notice the difference between the two. You would have to be driving around like a complete spacker tbh

So then, going by that notion, a cup (for me) is the most pointless car on the planet.

Fair enough. I love the exterior of mine, but the dash is gash.

That 172 is awsome looking.

I'd say go for a 182 FF no real benifit to the cup model, they even cost more to buy with less equiptment and only 20kg's less weight.

I've had a 182 with both cup packs & a 172 cup. The cup was rawer & overall i prefered it due to its lack of driver aids tbh; lower limits/lack of safety net = more mental focus = more fun imho... i found the 182 to be slightly too idiot proof for my liking :)

That and there is less to break on the cup!

For mway work the 182 is better as its more refined.

Grumpy, drive mine 1 day soon. if you pull up to the lights in 172 cup and i pull up next to you in the 182FF youl just wish you had the same.
Just dont get an RB as ill let your tires down!

Real cups look the best out the box. And for the comment about the cup being the most pointless car on the road.... WTF?! Something like a geewizz maybe..... Anyway, i've had both. The 182 just never hit the spot for me, not as gutsy, felt a bit numb? Steve from birchdown even says most 182's don't feel as keen as any 172 they have in... Cup for me everyday! Oh and any pics of the GT? I had a midnight blue gt3 for 3 years! Loved it!

If it's going on track then 172Cup IMO. Minus ~80kg will be noticable as it's like carrying a rather chunky adult male passenger. Also the lack of ABS would be an advantage on track. Otherwise, 182 seems a better choice for the road. 182Cup if you want to see where you're going at night, don't want the toys that keep breaking, and don't mind the CSFF heroes telling you it's a pointless car.

172 cup is epic but the oxfam interior really lets it down, get rid and fit a set of buckets/recaros, job done!!!

  RS2'ed 172 Cup
People who drive 172 cups are Heros IIRC ;)

Having driven a 172 Cup and a 182FF (With Cup packs) I personally prefered the 172 cup as it felt more raw.

But its horses for courses really, drive both and make your mind up.

182 Cup for me. It might make you feel like having no ABS but it's handy to have when you're not trying to be like Lewis Hamilton, gives you more confidence to brake deep on track as well as you know you'll still have some steering should the wheels lock.

You still get A/C as well and that counts for a lot on hot summer days.

For road use, ABS is useful, end of. Cue a dozen CS hero's saying they've never locked up etc, but it only has to happen once for you to find it useful. I very much doubt there's more than a few people on here that would be capable of cadence braking and steering at the same time in an emergency.

guys, thanks for all your comments...

ive half made my mind up, to get a 182ff...in a black or liquid yellow, id love a 182 cup...but how motherlovin rare are they!!!

tbh, i cant handle not having abs...late night driving is/will be far to dangerous on the roads, wet or even snow

own a cup & not writen it off...YOUR A HERO - imo!!

but i will be definatly getting a 182 in the near future, im going to keep my eye out for bargins!!!

as for keeping the punto...HELL NO...its going to the first person that offers me £100 below the asking price!

thanks everyone!!

I dunno why people think not having ABS makes you a hero? I had a Mk3 Polo that weighed circa 700kg's and it had brakes from a 160bhp supercharged ~1300kg Corrado. Could lock the 14" wheels on command but never had any real issues with it....prefer the ABS on the Clio though...something less to worry about.

ABS is a nice safety net on the road, if you actually remember that you can steer. On track, in the Clio at least, it's a pain in the ass, as it cuts in way before there is any decent level of tyre slip.

  BMW M4; S1000 RR
tbh, ABS is useful everywhere. If you're on a track and you lock your wheels, sure you won't crash but you'll have a nice flat spot on one or both front tyres... Now you need new tyres and you're fun for the day is over. I'd have ABS on any car of mine unless I could extract 95% of the cars potential every lap, every time.
