172 cup wheels why..

Different offset . Iirc the 172 wheels are ET37 and the 182 wheels are ET45 meaning the 172 wheel sticks out further and would catch the wheel arch.
 
The lower the offset i.e ET37 the further out the wheels stick , so would catch on the outside of the wheel arch on a 182 as it has a wider track than the 172 afaik .
 
The myth about the wider track is only due to the different wheel offsets

A 172 Cup is ET38.5
182 and Trophy is ET45

The lower the offset the more they stick out giving the 'wider track'
 
If you added spacers, this would make the issue worse. You need to 'take off' approx 6mm not add it on :)
