172 cutting out at random occasions.

Does anyone have any ideas why my Ph2 172 is going into limp home mode, won't go above 3k rpm and looses power ?

There is a light that comes on and it has a line going through it like a heart rate monitor.

There are no other light that are on apart form my airbag light which comes on and off when it likes, due to a loose/dodgy connection under the passenger seat as it goes off when you move the wires about under the seat.

Any one any ideas if it could be related to my climate control sticking on hot and cold ?
By sticking i mean it sometime still blows out hot air when its set at "Min" with A/C turned on.

My car did it today when trying to join the Dual Carraigeway from a slip road today and needless to say i had people flashing at me and beeping there horns.

Lol :S

When i turn off my ignition and turn it back on it seems to clear itself which i think is weird.
But even after i turn of my ignition and turn it back on it happened again, so off the ignition went and back on again and it hasn't lit up again since.
The climate control now works too.

Could be Coilpack, but im not sure, dont kno alot about the limp mode situation, but from what iv read on here it tends to point towards that

Coil Pack, leads and plugs have just been replaced about two weeks ago as car has been misfiring.

It has been fine since then till now.

Best get it on a diagnostics then, should pin point what the fault is, and save you some money, you got a Rs tuner? that should show it up

I have checked for fault codes by holding in the computer button on the end of the wiper stalk till it starts beeping and the needles start dancing.

I pressed the button a few times after that and i have no faults registered.
Just shows ---- (four lines) and no letters confirming a fault.

Would RS Tuner dig in deeper and find fault that i can't pick up with the method i used above.

Could it be a dodgy climate control panel that sticksthe air flaps between hot and cold settings thats causing it ?

throttle body, throttle potentiometer would be my 'guess' - what you are describing was exactly how my car was behaving.

...my cup was stalling when depressing the clutch, and i had the whole limp/3k rev limiter thing with that too. as suggested, get it diagnosed. you could try taking the throttle body off and cleaning it.

I had a new pedal fitted which cleared that code, but the car was still playing up - new throttle body fixed it (cleaning it didn't sort it in my case though).

It had a new tb under warranty a few years ago mate and it was cleaned out a few weeks ago when i had plenum off to change the plugs.

Will look into the throttle pedal though, although i aint stalling when pushing in clutch.

Limp Home mode just happens at random

hum, just do a quick search for "throttle potentiometer", you'll see people with similar issues. its all pretty much guess work till you get it diagnosed. if you are member of AA or RAC etc, be worth a call out - thats what I did instead of paying £60 or whatever Renault wanted :)

Good luck with it, I know how frustrating it can be :(

I called the AA out when my 172 started misfiring a few weeks ago to try and establish if it was plugs or coil pack using there fault code reader and needless to say a local garage that are sub-contracted to the AA came out with just a flat bed recovery truck and no tools to recover me to a destination of my choice.

I pay AA cover for what ???
Pissed off wasn't the word.......

So i don't really want to waste another call out incase i really really need to use it when stuck somewhere.

Cheers for your help though buddy, and i'm searching on here and ebay the now for a spare throttle pedal ;)

thats pretty shocking :s the AA guy I had come out was ok, although I must say the RAC were MUCH better when i've used them in the past - all depends who you get though I suppose.

maybe someone can confirm if they are just a uniform part (not 172/182 specific) - mine was only £40 brand new from Renault - if its not specific though, there are mk2 clio pedals for £0.99 starting bid.

Best of luck :)

Tell me about it, there are a few local garages which take over from the AA after a certain time up in Aberdeen.

Needless to say i never knew that or wouldn't have called them and wasted a call out.

I will post up another thread regarding the throttle pedal and find out.
£40 quid aint to bad for a new pedal from Renault.
