172 Fuel Gauge.....Rubbish

Hi,

Filled the wifes 03 plate 172 this morning, did about 20 miles and the gauge dropped from full to 3/4 ! Did about another 40 odd and it was heading towards 1/2!!

Are the Renualt 172 petrol gauges all this crap or do i have a Renno problem

Thanks

Dave

Sounds like a "feature" to me. You know, the things that come as standard but they forget to tell you about in the brochure.

they are crap mine drops from full to half in about 60-80 miles then it goes down slow after that, first time it happened i thought i had a hole in my tank or i had a very quite 6.0 V12 inder the bonnet;)

I would take it in, 20 miles to go from full to 3/4s doesnt sound right. Whats the mpg on it?

Blink172,

Thought about taking it in but the computer said i was doing 39mpg!

When i filled it up i checked the "old fashioned way" and my rough calc was 40mpg. This was over some 160miles of M1 and B roads.

I think the gauge may just "be like that" and some of the other replies hint this is so BUT i will keep an eye on it!!

I do notice that mine takes ages to drop from full and then drops to 1/2 really quickly and then the same again after hovering around 1/2 full for a while. Sounds like its just a quirky one like all the others, nice to know are little cars all have their own little characters

My Saxo gauge is always getting stuck. Nearly ran out of fuel a few times.

(disconnecting the battery always releases it and it works again fine for a while - common fault)

Same here - I sh*t my bricks initially. I thought the 182 was going to be a gas-guzzler. Takes a while to drop from full, then plummets to half, then takes a while to go further towards empty.

Dont trust your MPGs-to-go status either. The wifes Cooper S ran dry with 11 miles left. The annoying thing was that we were less than half a mile from a petrol station....

Ahhh, they were the days. Running out of petrol on the way to put a fiver in during my student days and having to push it the last few hundred metres.

i find the gauge on mine to be more accurate than the comp, after resetting the comp after doing 100miles it reads more accurate.

The computer on the Clio is very accurate since it runs off the injector computer and as long as you leave it for a hundred or so miles will be within a fraction of a percent of the real figure.

As for the fule gauge well its not going to win any awards 1/2 emply on the gauge means 1/3 empty in real life.

mine seems to do that aswell my solution is too only fill it up half way petrol seems to last longer!

all the different computers read outs,i.e mpg, miles to next fill up,miles driven since last, litres in tank never add up.

you know when your petrol light comes on that you can rely on that though!

can i ask though lol whats the furthest anyones ever gone on here with the miles to go blank and the fuel light on an whos all run out?i tried running mine dry today so to get to the fuel tank.drove about 45 miles, ever tried booting it for five, got back to my driveway and left it sitting thinking it was about to go,thing just wouldnt die an looked in the fuel tank an their was still petrol left!

i wouldnt drive very far with the fuel light on but me and my mate were coming back from a rally last year in his diesel mondeo and we did 120 miles with the light on  i was bricking it because we were on the m-way
