172 head gasket?

on my 02 172 i noticed about 2 months ago that water level had dropped, so topped it up, on slightly tho. Driving to work just now, and heaters went freezing and temp gauge went right up, then a minute later it dropped down to the middle and heaters got boiling...had a quick look at water level in the dark and it has dropped...head gasket on way out?

id take it into a garage and ask them to do a check mate. think some places have this thing that "sniffs" the coolant to see if there are exhaust fumes in the water system. hope this helps

yeah either that or get a compression test done. This will soon tell you if its the head gasket unless its obvious from visual inspection which it usually isnt.

Could be water pump starting to go check it for any signs of dripping o/s front when running.
