172 Impressing friends

I've given a few lifts to various friends lately and it always makes me laugh how the same observations are always made. i.e, I drive them sedately and they don't make any comments, yet whenever the car nears the redline they always say, "wow, this car's quite quick actually, what size engine has it got?" ......."2.0 litres in such a small car??"

Ok, it doesn't provoke the same reactions that my Impreza used to make but it makes me smile anyway!

Does anyone else get the same reactions?

Yep defo, they think it's just a normal Clio till I overtake then they hold the seat tight or grab the Jesus handles lol

My friends always enjoyed a blast in the 172 but they find the diesel more impressive!

The turbo cars always feel quicker I guess, especially as a passenger.

I got that question from my friends and work colleagues. Most of them don't know that a 2.0 litre Clio exists.

I love their face then haha!!

Also sometimes with people who don't have a clue, I tell them its a 1.2 with a loud exhaust. Then you put your foot down they are confused haha!

I know what you mean. I get it a bit in my 1.4 but most of these people havent got a clue what its like to drive or be driven in a Renault Sport Clio. I keep promising myself it will be my next car and then I can really show the folks what a nice bit of power is

i was never that impressed with my 172, i mean it was as quik as i expected it to be, it didnt shock me. i used to have i 106gti, now that would impress you for a little 1.6 quite literally every that went in that car said it was alot faster than they thought it would be. the clio is how you expect it to be

lol, i think my 106 fealt faster than my 172, they have an alot more agressive powerband, and i think the fact its small light old and rattley adds to the fun.

I came from a Phase 1 172 to a 106 GTi and whilst the 172 is quicker in a straight line there would be absolutley nothing in it on short tight bending roads.

Mine ran 133bhp at a recent rolling road

I found more people knew/respected the 172 for what it was with the flared arches etc but the 106 for me, is more subtle/under rated..

...unfortunate enough as it is for the 325i's that cant get away from it

went out in a for a quick drive in a mates c2 gt and he was saying "its quite fast aint it " and was sayg yeah its quite nippy. then when we got back i said to him "do you fancy a blast in mine. his face was pricless when i opened it up a bit lol.

I've never had this, but then they don't 'feel' all that fast imho. I think it's just down to the power delivery and (relative) lack of torque.

I've had the most comments about the handling and the brakes, oddly enough.

Yep the brakes are certainly one of the strongest points, if I haven't driven the 200 for a while I forget how good they are and invaribly push too hard the first time

I always drive friends about sensibly unless I'm asked/pushed to floor it a bit. Then it normally results in a smile. The experience has been dulled alot by having boost previously though, 5k kick my arse...

Had a girl with me the other night and gave it the beans chasing after a boxster and type r that wanted a go, she loved it! lol her dads in the popo though so never exceeded 100 jelly babies lol :rasp:

My friend was so impressed with my 172 that he bought a PH1 the following weekend!!
His other car (Mk2 Golf) is still on the drive rusting away!!

Saying this though, I had a ph2 172 around 2 years but really didn't like it then swapped it for a mk4 GSI. Then my friend went out and bought a Ph2 172 and I sold my GSI and bought my PH1 lol, I absoulty love my 172 now can't see me selling it for a long time!!!
