172 inlet box thing

Was having a poke around under the bonnet of my 172 today and noticed the wierd box type thing that runs under the inlet manifold on the front of the engine, runs from port 2 - 4 starting from the left of the pic. What is it?

Bloody hell what have i done??!! is it a crash thing? can i junk it? would make checking the oil much easier!!
