172 Mk1 Timing Belt noise

  RenaultSport clio 172 mk1
Hi,

I was hoping someone could help me out with a bit of advice. I know from reading several other threads that the timing belt becoming noisy and squeaky is not uncommon. It has happened to me twice now, once at 45K kilometres (28K miles) and again now at 75K. The first time was fixed with a new belt kit under warranty, but now it has happened again after only another 30K.

Does this mean my engine has a sinister underlying problem? Is the noise just annoying, or does it mean that the engine is on the verge of killing itself by slipping/snapping the belt?

Has anyone else in Oz had similar problems with their Mk1 172?

Thanks a bunch for any advice!

ok, it would prob be the bottom tensioner, i would have it changed asap, as if the aux belt comes off then it will rip the cambelt off

a engine speed linked whine/drone (inreases with rpm) is a tensioner that is too tight. If you had both new belts fitted at the same place, you might want to ask them if they are aligning the tensioner markers correctly.
