172 or 182, cant decide!

  Polo Gti . . 1.8 20v T
hi, i just got rid of a black 182 and i'm looking for a replacement! been looking around for a 182 today but i came across a 172 that caught my eye! its a 51 plate in flame red (jan 2002 registered) absolutly mint, done 72k with full renault service history. i haven't driven it yet but i realluy dont know what to expect after having a 182! the cars up for £5999 but so far the dealers offered to knock £250 off that! to me this sounds a bit steep, but would it be worth paying it if the car's as mint as it looks?!

now i know the 182 is obviously quicker but is it really that noticeable?

cheers!

The main difference I noticed driving a Cup packed 182 compared to a normal phase 2 172, was the handling, performance wise very little in IMO.

Thats silly money! I'd buy one of here thas been looked after.

I actually think my 172 handled better than my 182FF

£5999?!!!! I bought my 51 plate 172 (Feb 2002) with FSH and in lovely condition for £4k back in May.

For £6k i'd be looking at a 182

I owned a FF172 for 4 years and now own a 182 with cup packs for the past 2 1/2 years .

I'm in agreement with Rich . I think the 182 with cup packs handles better than the FF172 . Thats probably due to the slightly lower and stiffer suspension , wider track and the Exalto tyres fitted to the 182 opposed to the Contis fitted the 172 as standard .

After that it's more cosmetic i.e. different alloys , twin exhaust and if you want to be really pedantic the seats have white perforations whereas the the 172's perforations are plain ;)

hi, i have drove a 182 and i have owned my 172 for over a year now and iv never had any problems with it never really noticed a difference apart from obviusly wheels exhaust etc. The speed isnt that much difference, me and a mate went side by side me in my 172 and him in his 182 an i pulled on him so dont be put off by that. If it were me id decide on what colour u like cuz some are only availabe as 172's or some 182's. For nearly 6G on a 51 is a bit steap mate if u want spend that kid of money u could find a newer one.

id sell ya my 53 reg for 6G!!

Forget the fact that its a 172/182, its just a revised model.

What you're looking at is a car thats 4 years newer, with half the mileage, for the same money.

Seems a no-brainer to me...

or is that why it isnt a ff? is it just a cup or a mk2 172?

I've owned both. Much much better off getting a lower mileage 172 than a high miler 182. Straight line, no difference. The 182 handles slightly better, but not enough to justify the difference. I prefered the handling of my 172 on eibach pro's to the 182cup. 7k would get you into a 50k mile Trophy.

Best advice by far, newer car doesn't necessarily mean it's going to be better/trouble free

Because FF means it has cup packs. Not his leather etc. See my "FF missues" thread lol.
