172 or 182?

OK, so I'm currently pottering around the country in a sorry excuse for a Corsa which likes to scream at me every time I start the engine (apparently this is normal for a 55 Corsa, according to Vauxhall)

Anyway, my bro owns a 2003 172 Cup which seems to go like the wind so i fgured I'd get myself one.

I've been looking and I can't seem to make my mind up...

Do I get a 172 or a 182?

And what should I be looking to pay for a good example of each?

Last thing I want to do is swap a shed for a more expensive shed! lol

Cheers.

Depends what yor after to be honest, the 172 Cup owners will have you believe that its the best of the Renault Sport range because its the lightest (no ABS, Jail bait interior etc) Personally i think thats b****cks but there you go.

If you like cruise control and leather/xenons h/lights auto lights and wipers then the 182 is fo you.

If you like cancerous interiors and no mod cons then the 172 cup is for you.

The 172Cup has less to go wrong...but with the age being almost 8 years old...as with any car, its a risk you take.

I used to love my Cup...cracking car that you could drive for mile after mile...if you aren't used to having all the toys, you don't miss them.

If you can stretch to a 182, then you have the potential for less to be an issue...I wouldn't get a standard 172...just a Cup, or a 182...would depend on how deep your pockets are and what money you'll get for the Corsa.

love my 182, love 172's also, depends if you want 182 bhp and slightly more weight, or 182 horsepower, and as above, cruise control etc :)

If you can afford it then a decent 182, its the newest and in theory the best. If you can afford it then a 182 trophy.

I have a 172 cup, which I love. Not bothered about the interior and I enjoy the "rawness" of it, plus it will soon be my second car so creature comforts aren't missed. If ABS is important though then the 172 cup is a no unfortunately.

If your on a tighter budget then find a tidy ph1 172 and you will be laughing for £2000 ish.

But when push comes to shove they are all brilliant, just take your time and find a good one, then drive it and you will love it no matter which one you get!

Also I would pay £10 and join and read some of the guides, there is a guide about all the different models/specs available and I think there is a buying guide to, it is one thing I regret bout buying mine, i wish I had taken my time and joined this site and read up for a while before buying!

Why does the 172 Cup have less to go wrong?

No Climate Control....No Air Con, no side airbags...No Cruise Control, no auto lights, no auto wipers, no xenons (so cheap bulb replacements)...no lumbar support.

lol, why would any of the above fail? Bulbs need replaced, xenon bulbs last longer than standard halogen lamps. Nothing of the above are common faults

I had a ride in pug 306 rallye when I the Pug GTI-6, wanted to be in the GTI-6! the same difference between the FF 182 and the trophy, a little less extreme is the difference between the cup and the FF. - I prefer the comforts of the FF 182, just personal, I dont do track days, and love the aircon, cruise control etc, the choice is urs :)

If ya want the most fun then it's def the 172cup, people who haven't owned 1 think there just a 172 with turinis in a nice blue with ordinary seats. They are alot more than that believe me. I've now got a 182cup which grips better but a tiny bit of the fun is gone IMO. 182cup has air con and cruise control abs, ESP. just minus the grey leather.

  172 cup
if i want a car just for the pure fun of driving and arent worried about fancy interior get the cup , it looks better too with the turinis

  trophy
whatever model you get your onto a winner

i personally think the early 172 is a performance bargain whatever way you look at it, alot of car for around 2k

i believe this aswell. those problems dont really happen much and a cup is probably only better when at the limit neway. it may go around a corner at a few mph more but thats about it, that is my assumed opinion, i have never driven a cup so my point is invalid on this forum. from my view the only reason i would get a cup is if the belt was due and i wanted to save a bit of cash plus maybe an extra 1mpg average. not much then.

The cup is a funny one. Looks epic, and meant to drive very well. But it doesn't have abs. For me, for an everyday car, that's nonsense. I don't care what the ragnotti wannabe heroes say, it's a useful safety net. Cadence my arse, there's a handful of people on here that could utilise that in an emergency.

I'd go for a late 172, and with the cash saved get decent coilovers.

So if you like fake plastic 'leather' in a car, a 182 is for you? :S

Looks better, but is no different as the chairs are the same, and iirc, you don't look at seats whilst driving?

Danny...where did I say Common faults? I said that they are things that can go wrong.

I wasn't having a dig, but providing the OP with some feedback.

Get a 182 if you can. They have nicer colours :D Also to the average Joe they look a little bit more sporty..

But if your young then your looking at a few hundred more to insure a 182. For me its about 2800 to insure one but a 172 cup is 2200 and standard 172 is cheapest at about 2100.

Rofl. There should be no difference to insure a 172 or 182. The trophy is a group higher, some companies won't even insure cups.

The only 182 colour worth shouting about is racing blue.

Bear in mind the 182 exhaust is pricier to replace when it falls off. And it will fall off!

182 Cup for me:

+ Points: 182 Engine (power), equal length drive shafts (less torque steer), cup packs (looks and handling), the extra castor for improved steering feel (shelf centres a delight!), air con (no sweaty nads), cloth seats (again less sweaty/cold/hot etc) and racing blue paint = the best colour for a 182.

- No one on here seems to like them...errr...it's not a Trophy...erm..that's it!

I've always thought for an all round Clio it's the pick of the bunch. Certainly is when you consider that it cost less than a 182 and all you lost was the s**t seats and rubbish climate control.

I'd rather have a mint cup/172 than an average 182 for the same monies.

Someone's ripping you off then! Should be zero difference between a 172 and 182 to insure.

Go to any comparison site, and put your age 19 with one years no claims. You will see ;)

Thats a new one!

I am 19 with one years no claims, so I've already done all this ;)

lmao then why the hell is it like 500 quid more for me?! I remember looking about 6 months ago, and the 182 was only like 50 quid more. So maybe its a recent thing? Ive also noticed theres a lot more 182's around these days.

I bought mine on the theory of "less to go wrong" hasn't quite worked out that way. lol.

172 Cup carries the best colour, best wheels as standard, IMO of course. Thing with 172s for me is the standard wheels which I'm not keen on, same with standard 182 wheels and the toys/gadgets would be no use to me as I wouldn't use them. Best thing to do is test drive each one and find which suits you best.

Considered a ph-1? dash is abit meh! but they do live up to their reputation as being ph-quicks ;)

Still looks better than the cup interior

Lol, handbags @ 20 paces :rasp:

Not a huge difference in price on the 172 versus 182. Its a little bit more cash to play with if you go for the cheaper option but not as much choice colour wise.
