how reliable ae these any probs to look out for,, what mileage should you walk away from one

I wouldnt worry about milage so long as its serviced, you might want to make note of possible costsly bit ie 72k service is expensive and you might need new dampers at say 80k also you might need a new clutch.

172 have seen over 100k no problems at all. The 172 engine is based on the 1.8 16V and 2.0 engine but more updated with its potential weeknesses fixed ie better cooling. Since Vlavers and Willaims have seen over 300k with correct servicing I wouldnt worry about none wear and tear items ie engine+ gearbox.

Anyway you gan get a new engine + box quite cheap them a set of coilovers and it will be a good cheap low milage car.

Just check for rust (not there there should be much since plastis is used a lot) + crash damage.
