172 problems

As i posted earlier, i have just bought a 172 and i was having some problems with the exhaust rattling. Anyway, to cut a long story short, i went for a drive last night and i heard a clunk under the car. I looked and the back box doesnt appear to be sitting right, i think one (or more) of the rubbers has come away. So basically i think the rattle has finally decided to become terminal. Which is good because at least if i get this fixed i think the rattle will go.

To add to me problems, on the way home i ran over a dog .

dont know if this is the same on a 172....

but i have had to fix my heatshield 3 times now under the exhaust...keeps unbolting itself....
Rattles like hell

think they are designed to just give up after a certain amount of time...

btw poor dog, hope it didnt wreck the front of the car..

rattling could be coming from the centre section, although it should be very obvious if it is.

Hope you just didn't leave the dog!

It will be the 4k rattle or the heatshield problem as Kiev has mentioned. Neither is that bad really...

It was just one of those little rat-like dogs. I think it went straight under the tyre as i had no damage to the front. I tried my hardest to avoid it, but it just ran the wrong way into tyresville. Probably just out for a walk and ends up under a Michelin of Dieppes finest.

How old is your car, 172 backboxes are notorious for falling off, I created quite a fireworks display when mine did.

Rear silencer lasts between 3yrs to 3yrs and 6 months, incidentally just a little longer than the warranty. They just drop off, which is nice.

Right ive been under the rear of the car and you wont believe what i found. A screw driver wedged in between the rear rubber and the hook. I can only guess that the car went in somewhere for a new rubber and the mechanic left his screwdriver on the job. This car is starting to fill be with dread. Still at least i think if found the cause of the rattle.
