172 rear mount adjustment

This is a guide of how to adjust the rear mount to stop the vibrations when accelartaing hard in low gears. could someone make this a sticky?

Right, first of all you will need:
Axle stands
16mm socket with extension bar and spanner

Ok, open the bonnet and you will see this on the right hand side of the engine bay:

Loosen (doesnt have to be completly undone) the 4 bolts around the engine mount, this is the top mount adjustment, push the engine back as far as possible and then tighten the bolts up.

Next, put the car on axle stands, and undo the dog bone mount:

You will also have to loosen the back of it to enable it to swing down:

This is the bracket:

The two 16mm bolts you can see on the bracket are the ones you have to loosen to allow the bracket to move, once you have loosened(not undone!) these bolts off:

Push the bracket towards the front of the car, so the bottom moves towards the front and the top of the bracket will pivot out towards the rear of the car, now, (this is the tricky part!) whilst pushing the bracket forwards, you have to do up the top bolt to hold it there, and then do the bolts up as tight as possible.

Put the dog bone mount back on, and check everything is tight.

Recheck the top mount is tight,(if it still vibrates, you will have undo the bolts, then pull the engine towards the front of the car and do the bolts up.)

This has worked everytime on my car, im not sure if the mk2 172 has this same mount set up!

Hope this helps everybody!

does sum1 wana pin this, prob the biigest prob ona 172/182 and hers how to solve it????????????????????????

im not sure, iirc the 182 has a twisted rear mount disposing of all this bracketory!

another thing i forgot to mention, make sure that when you try to get to the top bolt on the bracket, ive got a special ratchet to get into this place, and a regular ratchet wont be able to get in there due to the exhaust manifold, so if your lucky and have ratchet spanners ideal, but otherwise its a spanner jobbie!

Is this to resolve the problem of the knocking noise when accelerating hard in 1st/2nd gear ?

depends what car, and if its a solid vibration in 1st anda bit in second then yes this should resolve it, i cant be certain as im unsure what your knocking is.If its an Exhaust sounding/engine hitting the bulkhead style vibration this should solve it, otherwise, try just pulling the engine towards your when you undo the top mount then do it up, and see if this resolves your knocking.

Cheers whoever Pinned this!

was this done on a 172? cos my air con is onl the left, not the right as per the descritions, and is a dog bone mount also called a wishbone mount? (i have little knowledge of mechanics lol)

Yes it was done on a 172.

Depends, its on the right side of the engine bay, but on the left as you look at the engine from the front.

And no the rear mount isnt the wishbone mount.
