172 Throttle bodies on Rolling Road

  1.2 MK2 PH2
i dont understand the concept of throttle bodys tbh? i understand they give a car more power... but what exactly are they in laments term? is it to allow more cold air in to the car or what?

Simple terms you have an individual air inlet per cylinder as opposed to one for four cylinders on the normal 172.

This increases the air into the cylinder, along with that the fueling.

More AIR + More FUEL = More POWER
so its like small induction kits.... + Acid&sniff!

how often do these throttle bodied cars need a re-build then??

its something i want to look into for the future...

also...just HOW noisy are they inside the car? like...is it boomy or anything?

I'd never take an NA engine to the ITB stage, too much cost outlay for not enough gain for me.

I'd just buy something faster and better to begin with.

Its only on the clios they cost a fortune.

A jenvey setup with loom and Omex can be had for £1200.

Its the mapping the by a professional that costs the money.
Live mapping on an airfiled is the best and probably set you back £500 for a day.

Ive seen people put bodies on with a base map and make 60+ bhp instantly.

All depends on the application mate.

The cars dont need to be rebuild, they are just rebuilt in the 1st place by means of cams, pocketed pistons, con rod bolts to take the revs, the list can go on or be as short as you wish.

Driving a proper built ITB'd car is much better than driving a turbo car.

If you ever get the chance to drive a 260bhp Caterham R500 you will love it!

Never really, unless there is a problem.... never seen one...

they need an occasional balance.. just helps to idle better

at cruise you cant hear them... under load they growl..

Oh I agree, and tbh I'd sniff out a bargain car where someone else has done all the hard work like Jesus did.

Would never pay thousands for the parts and fitting alone though.

For me its N/A all the time for fast road and track use.

That caterham R500 i was talking about, On a private road ;) completely destroyed a R34 Skyline which i know is pushing over twice the power of the caterham.

Yes i know that power to weight ratio is the major factor, but the fact i nailed it half way round the round a bout and he couldnt get on the power till he was in a straight line.
I was 50m ahead by this time.

Honestly just go hire one, buy one or beg to ride in one, they are the worlds most amazing car!

GDI have a CSR which is even faster and lighter I believe, but the R500 will beat an Enzo over a 1/4 mile... so it's no real surprise it blitzed the LIner! lol. There was an R33 at Silverstone on Saturday that was probably the quickest car of the day, just a howl and crackle as it ate the track up, must have had some insane power.

The CSR is a good car but not as much fun to drive as the S3 chassis.
Ive driven a CSR 260 race/road cars and also built a 300bhp CSR with quaiffe 5 speed dog box. That was fast and beat the top gear lap record.
Look on youtube for caterham lap record top gear.
Car was driven by the guy i won the 2006 CSR championship with.

The R500 and the older caterhams with de dion rear setup are more responsive and fun to drive than a CSR.

Ali - Im taking the R400 out this weekend on airfield trackday! :)

The X330 - R600.

Supercharged Duratec now thats fast, but still isnt as nimble as the R500 was. I had a few laps round donnington in the X330 and its impressive.

You big girl.
Sit next to a proper race driver on a test day then! I did for some ballast testing as i was the smallest and we got a dispensation for a passenger to ride in the car.
I was like brake, brake, brake, brake ok were 150m past where i would have braked.

Seriously impressive, really hit home how much of a novice I really am compared to the proper racers!

Being thrown over kerbs at 100+mph is great fun. :dead:

erm... yeah think I might give that a miss, I can see how quick they are perfectly fine from the safety of the stand thanks! lol

Ha ha I just love the feeling of speed and good drivers amaze me. I love watching them in action driving near the limit.

It amazes me how calm and collected they are, I can be like that in a Kart but in a car i struggle to be so calm when the adrenaline takes over.

I'm a bad passenger if I dont know and trust the driver... race driver or not I just dont like being driven balls out... 2 live every assumes is a nut case, but I'm used to his fast driving, but he was starting to scare me at Spa... for good reason, he came off on his next trackday from going too balls out lol.

other than a Russ Abbot fat suit I dont know what protection there is really in an R500 or a CSR! lol

... and you call me soft, 2 live not that bad, he's in control of the car (95% of the time) so it's not all bad, I guess it's the Yorkshire style of driving that s**t you up... by that I'm guessing I'd actually be okay in anything then really? lol

95% of the time yes...But the other 5% is certain suicide or Kamazi! We ended up in a field in the middle of brunters!

lol, that's nothing, try driving 159 in 14.0 trim over the top roads in Todd with Jon yelling "right, as you hit the top of the (blind) hill, throw it left and keep it flat out!"

erm... no thanks, I'll break if you dont mind!

14.0 trim, inc of baby seats and some of his wigs and spare knickers! Crackin!

pmsl, pretty much aye. it's a bit disconcerting having someone tell you to take a blind hill flat out at 3 figure speeds and tell you to throw it left as you hit the top!

"f**kin Williams drivers!" ;)

tbh I blame the cars as well... as Northy f**king terrible for being a grade a fruit cake behind the wheel at times... it's worse in a way, at least we expect it from good ol 9 lives lol

The top gear lap record been cracked again by an Ultima 720 just top gear won't test the car for some reason.

I would like to see the tyres than ran for that test.

On cut clicks we were 4 seconds faster, but for the film we used trackday spec dunlop's.

Ultima 720 I think I'll have a look tomorrow.

Makes me laugh on there website about how they built the car for the 0-100-0 record run!

Well actually no, my dad and his mate built and they did the test in his car as ultima wouldnt supply autocar with a car to use as they were worried they wouldnt be fast enough!

oi.......wel av a less o that pussy talk lol

told u mate.if u just flick it left before the brow, getting it sideways just before you take off, and keeping the power in, you land in a straight line and still accelerating.......i tried gettin monkey to do the same on my organised run for the club after kents cams had destroyed my top end on the m65.......he was braking too ;)

mind you....iv been hammering those roads for over 15 years now, in various cars of varying states of tune...btw.the williams is a lot faster than freds old RA spec scoob over there too ;)

id love to get driven round anywhere in my car by a class driver.....show me what it can really do.......having an instructor in the pass seat screaming 'easy monkey....fukkin ell ...ow u get round there ' is as close as iv been so far tho. lol

and ali......you werent in when i had the little off at brunters.....but i didnt tell you til after ud got in the car.....well...more like shouted above the girly screams ;)........u sound like me mum ....she hasnt been in a car with me since i was 18....scared her to death in my 1380 mini lol.

andy what is mpg then ?? how much does it cost??

mpg wise an easy 35 can be acheived with a steady cruise going, other than that its about 10 when flooring it everywhere. But a good avg which weve seen is around the 25-28. (thats me anyway)..

Basic kit starts at around £4700 with the cams fitted aswell. There are a few more kits coming out in the new year so keep an eye out because you may see something else to bite at.
