172 vs Cooper S Insurance

Ive just had a online quote from Elephant.

Clio 2002 172 = £1712.87

Cooper S 2003 = 1012.34

Ive checked this more than once, as i thought id made a mistake in the quote!!!

Im 20 with 1yrs NCB... and 1 claim.

Wondered how they can justify this as the Cooper S is group 15 and the 172 is group 16??????

Doubt its to do with litreage

Im 19 (almost 20), 1year NCB etc..

£2,000 on a 172

£1,019 on a Volvo T5 with 225bhp

Both fully comp etc £250 excess

Yes but would you really want to drive around in one of the ugliest cars ever made Clio1400 ;) Id rather crawl on my face to the shops than drive that !

But its £700!! i could understand it being £150 maybe £200 but the difference is silly.

If the 172 is classed grp 16 then surely in reference to this price the Cooper S should be about grp 13

I think it may have to do with the image, Im sorry to say. I think your average 172 driver will be quite a few years younger than the average Cooper S driver (due to initial cost of car probably, image). And of course, insurers always penalise younger drivers because were less experience and apparently more likely to wrap it around a tree.

But I wouldve thought the Mini would be in a higher group as id expect the replacement cost of bits to be higher (being a BMW) hence crashes would in theory cost more.

Im 25, 2yrs NCB and going to be paying £785 with Elephant for my 172 - I didnt think that was too bad, but havent ever tried a quote for a Cooper S.

it goes on more than just the group for instance groups are also split up into sub catagories ie group 16e 16b etc all this is then relating to how easy it is to nick the cars as well as others like stealing items from the cars and how the crime rates go on both cars, however yes 700 is a bit off a silly sounding difference, maybe there systems f**ked and itsa goin through as a normal cooper??

Lol its at this point that I own up for having a thing about 850s. I have two T5s on my drive right now, a saloon and an estate.

Theyre both white, and its great watching people magically move over for you / slow down when bombing down the motorway.

Theyll eat a 172 too! (Especially with the RICA chip - 305bhp!) :devilish:

But I love my Clio still!!
