172 vs. M-Coupe

Was heading into leamington yesterday with the Mrs (yes +1), and just off the M69 I saw what looked like a legendary M-Coupe (i farkkkking love them), anyway we were cruising down past the Ben Hur roundabout down towards the A46. Down the A46 sliproad he booted it full whack, and i was at this point 20 yards behind him just smiling...so he booted it and i dropped the gears and tried my hardest to follow him.

Without saying too much and without exagerating, in what i estimate to be a 20/30 second chase, he pulled maybe 5 car lengths. But as soon as i hit warp speed, i backed off as i like my licence.

We got off the A46, and he too was going my way. Stopped at some lights and we both booted it down the road to the next set as we were still in a dual lane. He really didn't pull that much on me given the extra power. At the next set he wound his window down and commented on how quick the 172 was, as he'd never been up against one.

Was a lovely car though, seriously a car i would LOVE to own even if only for a year. Hens' teeth are more common, and the M3 coupe (for me) just speaks batmobile cool. Oh and it sounded like orgasm on tap!

There was an R32 having a pop too, but i think the driver was a bit poo as he just wasn't keeping up with us, was a woman driver though

Nice one m8....although I`d imagine if he could have give it full beans from the lights he should have disappeared...I remember on a Clarkson vid years back it pasted a 22B Scooby from a standing start..think they are 11 ish 0-100 as well. Still good do tho m8...always better when they admit how quick the little Clios are

The M3 looks nicer, the new M-Coupe looks bloody gorgeous though!

Nice one mate, but arent the M-Coupe's sub 5 to 60? I appreciate you could maybe keep up with him on a short burst but in reality he should have pee'd all over you. Lovelly car though, once rated the most fun handling rwd car on top gear or something wasn't it?

Like i said i don't like exagerated claims which is why i've tried to be pretty much impartial, i respect the MC like it should be.

I never said i kept up with it, i never said i overtook it, i never said it was touch and go...it beat me, it pulled on me - period.

What i did say was i didn't get butchered the way i tohught i would, and as with racing ANY car you know is faster, you just have to smile to yourself and enjoy the occasion. And i smiled heartily as it just disappeared 50ft in front of me.

Book on them is 5.1 to 60 by the way afaik.

Ill hazard a guess thats a badged up 330.My mate has a v reg m3 and it used to wipe the floor with my 182.It was a cab too so it was heavier and handled less.

If were talking m coupe as in z3m coupe i thought they were the ones that were quicker than the newest m3 and pretty untouchable cars for straightline speed??

Even the old non evo m3s are pretty fast.

Went out in my mate's m plated one the otherday and it felt super quick.

Indeed, he sounds a little confused.

Hmm reading my text and in his defence i put "M3 Coupe" in my text, my mistake (perhaps a mod can alter that to say M-Coupe). Like i said, given they're 325bhp monsters, i thought my 172 did itself proud. Never expected to come close, and it wasn't but i did ok

it was the quietest thing on track at Knockhill and wasn't that impressive round there, I think the Exiges were beating it but I'm not certain as I was too busy watching the 993 Turbo vs GT3 RS mmmmmhmmmm

So true, people love to be petulant on these forums for no reason what so ever, seems even more so in the last month people having a pop at each other for no reason.

Chris, it's not scientific unfortunately, didn't get time to calculate exactly how far it had pulled on me, which is why i said approximately. Started out on the slip road onto the A46 off M69, we were travelling at about 25 down the ramp because of traffic. He went, I went....he went faster, end of. We stopped thrashing at around the first bridge, roughly 20 seconds i guess. The point I was trying to make was I didn't fair as bad as i thought i would have done.

Was great fun though, and makes a change from the usual Saxo gang. Didn't stop smiling for a few miles

I had a run against a M3 Convertible (320bhp) at Goodwood...and from the top of 3rd through to hooking 5th, he pulled not a great deal on me...not as much as I'd have thought anyway.

Who cares if the M-Coupe would have destroyed the Clio? Al Ozzy has said is that he didn't get beat as bad as he thought he would. The driver was probably having a bit of fun and not pushing it to the limit, but when he got the chance he wound his window down and commented that the Clio was a quick little car.

It's this reason why I always like trying it on against quicker cars, because the driver's are normally better people that don't mind chatting afterwards, unlike Chav's in Saxo's, Corsa's, etc who turn a 'race' into an instant vendetta...

Ian get off your high horse, you've been confused this whole thread making random comments. As i've said repeatedly, it was an M-Coupe, not an M3 Coupe as you seem to think. And no an M isn't an M.

Read the thread, take a deep breath and then start making some sense, also if you could point out where I state that:

A) I was all over his back bumper...
B) I overtook him...
C) I destroyed him...

Then once you find the ridiculous exageration i made you can have peace of mind, until then purrrleaase pipe down.

haha once again a comedy thread out of a genuine and honest post from a member merely wishing to share his experiences. he wasnt asking for 'respect' or saying 'look at me, mr big b****cks' he was just sharing an experence which fellow like minded members may appreciate. so all the negativity and 'your're talking bull' posts are somewhat harsh. i personally thought it was a matter of fact description, with no embellishment from the auther. M-coupes are quick little beasts, and are a 'love em or hate em' style. (personally i love them) the fact the guy wound his window down and commented on the speed of the clio shows he was having fun so probably not beasting it, however, its still an interesting observation which he felt he wanted to share. if you agree or dont agree thats entirely upto you, this is a public based forum so 'freedom of speach' is encouraged, but this isnt an excuse to cause problems or be aggressive towards one another and make the forum a tiresome place for its genuine and regular users and contributers.

Seems a lot of people here dont really have a clue what they are talking about. I am always seeing storys of heavier cars with 50 more bhp "absoutely destroying" the clio and stuff like that.

Some people have had actual experience having "fun" with cars on the road.

My mate "had fun" with an M3 in his chipped Ibiza FR 1.8T and believe me until 90 there didnt seem to be that much in it. After that it gradually pulled away.

The fact is the little Clio will give a lot of cars a run for their money up till 90.

I had "fun" with a LCR yesterday and it pulled ONE car length on me up to 1 lepton. So what?

Its not a comparison ffs, it was some fun i had and it was rare to find an M-Coupe and someone willing to also share a laugh. Its not handbrake wheelspinning drag racing through town, its just some dual carriage, subjective fun.

If you can't appreciate the context of this thread then please, like some people seem to be having difficulties doing then please go search for some Nova SR, 106, Saxo threads to ridicule.

The fact is...THE M-COUPE WAS QUICKER, AND BY A LOT. But my 172 made a respectable performance.

Ian he did not "believe" that he could keep up. He was merely up for a laugh, and so was Mr M-Coupe.

Do you set out on a daily basis trying to wind other folk up?

Everyone agree's that a M - C O U P E's would beat a 172, but there is no harm in trying to purely see how you get on.

What's the point in buying a hot hatch if you're going to be a ***** and drive it slowly and only challenge cars that you can beat? I would rather try and keep up with a faster car, instead of destroying something slower.

Most drivers underestimate 172/182's which is why it was good of Mr M-Coupe to wind down his window and comment about its pace.

Its all good clean fun, and nobody every mentioned "how he nearly beat it", etc, he was purely stipulating that he was surprised that the M-Coupe didn't pull further in front.
