Yeah up to around 120 then they are sh*t.

whats the top end of them, my bird used to have a mini cooper, only 115bhp @ a 1.6 but that was quick, and i got it upto 135mph racing a golf gti,

on my private run way.

they are quick in the right hands, otherwise quite often they are in a ditch, as they are quickly falling in the hands of young lads these days, hence insurance going up on them all the time.

never driven one but notice they seem to die in 5th so untill 110mph i think the redline is in 4th they are rapid then still keep going but just not so fast, same with most cars tho i suppose

Sound like a whinging old man!
I'm 20 with an '04 182, I'm working my arse off to own and improve mine so have no plans of ditching it, Thanks very !

Anyway that out of the way! Taken mine to 135 then eased off but prob good for 140-145 in the right conditions! But that is a 182!

I agree with this.

I can keep up with an evo5 upto 120mph (on private road) then the clio runs out of puff.

what bhp are an evo 5?

what are you running, not a standard 172? :S :S

They are very quick cars, 0-60 flies by. It won numerous test for being the hottest hatch out there. These cars are not completely about straight line speed. They can travel through corners a lot quicker than most!

Buy one, you will love it.

i am, k-tech are doing a engine conversion for me, have a waiting time of 6-8 weeks though, :( :( :(

Has anyone used them b4? are they good?

think they have about 250bhp standard, correct me if im wrong.

but once you count the 4WD Power losses and extra weight...

was wondering as my bro and his stepdad have a fq-300, they are rapid, he just got a golf 1.6 fsi and he keeps taking the piss out of my clio saying, it will always be a clio, so i aim to get the swap done (on the sly) then when we go for a drive just grin and say ' not bad for a clio huh? ' wanker,

Agreed.

Who cares about top speed or how fast it is over a ton. IMO on Britains A and B roads there are not many cars that will be quicker up to legal speeds. A hot hatch is about handling as much as speed check out EVO magazines best handling front wheel drive cars of all time test;)

  Clio 172 mk2
Evo 5 is quoted at 276bhp...but that's running on Jap fuel so wil probably be 15/20bhp less on UK fuel

Agree with the above..like said....any idiot can drive over a ton down the M-way...I see women in people carriers and 4X4s doing it all the time and of course good old rep man!

as said though, a clio flat out on coilovers can be a bit scary at times unless you are on a very smooth road.

lol a golf 1.6 fsi and hes taking the piss out you? you dont need a 2.0 conversion to "beat" him, just get some good suspension.

bet my 1.2 16v would kill his golf with just suspension & brake mods.

Something I forgot, and probably the main thing for most, is they are cheap to buy and run. Everything they ever get compared to are in different cost brackets, ie much more expensive.

why arent the golf's that quick, they are only 116bhp, but they weigh a ton :D

what does fsi stand for?

a mate had the 1.6 fsi, i swear in a straight line my 1.2 clio was very similar....

ha-ha-ha,

hes all excited to getting it on saturday saing will will be quick as fook, he said he will leave most cars on the road for dead, prick,

when looking in the parkers 172's are quicker the 2.0 gti golfs by far,

i can wait for my 172 :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

Probably would..the Golf isn't the best handling car

well it was very similar to 60 anyways, after that the 1.6 power comes in but with the weight of the mk4 and only having 120bhp a 75bhp clio is similar to 60!

clio would be simmilar to 60, suspension mods and stripped and you have a 900kg car with similar/better handling than a 172/182, a capable car for what it is

Was that down hill with a tail wind to get to 135. No way will a 1.6 115bhp car make it to 135. Probably 135 indicated 120ish for real though. My car doesnt make it to 130 and i have similar weight better aerodynamics and more power.

But there is a reason why so many motoring magazine etc love the RS's due to speed handling etc etc. And the mk4 golfs the 2.0 8v are SLOOOW! Had a play with one and i only have a 1.6 and he got left. Then again do have similar power but his weighs a lot more than mine.

I was looking at getting a 1997 Ibiza GTI (the one with the 2.0 16v golf gti engine in it)

Meant to be 150bhp but a valver was half the money and probably still quicker

i managed 143mph and the gear light came on that is so funny what you supposed to do in 5th gear lol i ran out of road but a little bit more is possible but dont forget about the lost at those speeds we are probably not going that fast speedos may be out!! agreed that cornering and of the mark speed all 172 182 valvers williams are top notch!!!

  Turbos.
As soon as you i three figures my 172 runs out of puff. I have never tried to go past 120mph, and can't imagine a car still 'pullling' at 140mph...maybe battling to go forward whilst shaking itself to death.

I'm sure the 10bhp extra helps for the 182 but i'm sure that probably only equals 1/2mph max, and the slightly wider tyres produces more drag ;)

  LY 200
They are quick for what they are and i can beieve the evo5 claim....I had an enncounter with another supposedly far superior jap car a few months back over 3 short duals with roundabouts thrown in between and lets just say i doubt he was an happy boy after. Lol

Did have a hefty kit on it mind but thats just an example. As said though its all about the handling and the pace to speeds which wont get you locked up!!!

  406 passion wagon..
Have had an indicated 132ish whilst chasing a Ibiza Cupra R down the slip road, was nout in it to 120ish then i breezed by, if I'd have been quicker off the lights he wouldn't have got passed. He was spraying all sorts of crap out the exhaust...

Chickened out at 132ish.... value my license.

LMAO... whether it's 132 or 142 it's still a ban either way mate.. Generally i would say dont get caught going over a ton..

  ph1 172
yeah I sometimes touch 110 in my valver but only when its clear and even then im probably not going much over 100 if i was clocked.

Anything plus 100ish could see you lose your licence but thats not even worth thinking about when your in prison and have no job from doing 140mph. And then your wife runs of with the milkman while you're inside.

It might be fun to do it once or whatever but im sure quite a lot of the people that get done for 120mph+ were doing it for the first time.

Pay some money and do it on a track and keep your job, life and wife!
