17s on a 172 Cup?

  Mk1 MX-5 (x3), Westy
Hi guys,

Looking to get a second set of wheels only for track use, and have been given the idea by a friend that I could possibly go for some 17s and therefore benefit from cheap, used slick tyres from race cars etc.

Now, obviously the diameter would increase a bit over the standard 195/45/16s (and 195/50/15s I have on now) so the car would be a bit slower in a straight line, but can anyone see any reason why it wouldn't work?

Cheers in advance for any input :)

are race tyres easy to come by?
i would of thought if it was that easy and cost effective then everyone would have been doing it.

Handles s**t, looks s**t, drives s**t. Don't do it.

I borrowed some 17's for a week and they were f**king AWFUL. DO NOT DO IT.

Buy 15's, then you get cheap tyres brand new. Buy track day tyres. Slicks are massive overkill.

Good point well made, haha. There seem to be a fair few on eBay at the moment and I've found a few sites advertising they always have them in (around £150ish a set too)... But as you said, there must be a reason...

Well that told me :D hehe.

The difference in circumference ends up about 6% which is waayy too much I think, so 15s it is. Time to hit the search!

Cheers gents.

also race tyres in 17" diameter have quite a sidewall on them, so the overall diameter wold be HUGE. race tyres don't come in silly low profiles
as said, 195/50 track day tyres and you're off ;)

Lol. I just don't want you to suffer the same pain I did. Luckily, I only borrowed mine while I was waiting for my 15's to arrive, if I'd have paid money for them I'd be pissed off.

Have a look around for some light 15'' wheels, ultraleggera's, team dynamics pro race 1.2's etc.

Thanks man!

Managed to source some used Superturismos which aren't mega light as far as I am aware, but are within my budget and aren't terrible by any means. Also decided to give Federal 595 RS-Rs a go...

Thanks again for everyone's help :)
