182 Decat: My findings, and a few Q's.

Car  Clio 197
I've had my blueflame decat fitted for a few days now.

Initially, I had it fitted without the Green panel filter, and it made a little difference. It had a nice rasp, and a little more at the top end. The 5k kick had disappeared, and I was worried about a loss of power.

Once I added the panel filter (which I have also had on the car alone, with no other mods), I could feel the difference.

Previously, my car would die after about 6500rpm. Now it has a lot more to give, and keeps on going to the limiter. Economy has recently taken a dive (as I've been ragging the t*ts off of it), so I can't commment on that until I get a normal run out of it.

From cold, it pops and rasps quite nicely, and soon settles to become ordinary sounding when driven sedately. Over 3k, when flooring it, it has a lovely rasp to it. It sounds mean between 5-7k (not louder, just more like a sports car IMO).

The car feels nice 'n' torquey & smoother. I've found that I'm hitting the limiter quicker than than before... I wish I could get it on a rolling-road to see exactly what's happened. 5th gear at 80MPH is better than before, indicating a bit more torque.

For a total price of £100, (pipe + filter) I'd definately do it again. I'd say the gains are about 2-3%, but the whole experience improves as a result.

Now for the questions:

1) I've heard stories of pops and flames (from de-cat), however I havn't noticed any from inside the car. Is the middle-section taking this away? Does it even matter?

2) Why do my exhaust fumes STINK so much... I guess the CAT has been masking this? Can one tell if the fuelling is right from the smell?

3) Why has my toxic fumes warning light not come on? I hope it doesn't, however, I would have thought it would come on as I've done 250 miles or so.

1) you'll struggle to get flames out of it, i only know of 1 proper cup that does it, and they're tiny

2) you love it

3) its a renault, it seems some do and some don't, it might eventually pop up

love Fred xx

1) mines pops but no flames :)

2) get used the the smell oms mine is the same

3) mine light hasntcome on but i only have one lambda sensor

1) I get the ocasional pop
2) never noticed the smell
3) my light came on after 6 weeks
ps I noticed a big difference in torque once I had the SMT6 fitted.

^^

I think the two work well together.

Without the panel filter, the car had whistle - it sounded like air was trying to get in via other routes!

I've had the panel filter fitted alone too... and that too, helped with torque IMO.

It's so difficult to tell when you're potentially looking at 0% bhp gains but better drivability - do you know what I mean?

Oh, I forgot to mention - the car felt quicker with the paper filter in, because of a much more prounced 5k kick (with no decat).

Initially I thought the filter was making things worse... however over time I noticed that there was a difference at the lower-end; so that explains the lesser kick (there's less of a difference to feel)?

I don't know... I'm sure lots of it is psychological. :S

ive got a AAS decat for a 182 for sale, only 3 months old. quality stainless steel. £70 plus postage.

Oms, was it easy to fit (or did you ask Alex to do it)? It sounds like an improvement I need / want urgently!

I fitted it myself (only for the experience).

The MK2 172 de-cats are more fiddly (since there are essentially two of them). I'm not sure about the MK1's.

Any exhaust place should fit it for £10-£15 cash in hand.

I got a sports cat the other day, and am wondering about this 5 k kick thing.

I occasionally think it doesnt feel as fast as it used to, but then if the 5 k kick is lowered, then it prob would feel slower.

Why does the 5k kick go ?

And do you think the hot whether would make it feel slower from 70-90 lol... random !!
