182 FF or trophy

  R27 - 77/500
Sorry guys im sure its been asked before but just after peoples opinions.

im looking at RB or LY 182 but also Trophys are within budget so just wondering which would be best buy.

Am I right in thinking the struts need rebuilds on Trophys quite often?

And do trophy not have Xenons?

Any other pros and cons?

I had this same dilema when buying new a few years back. I went for a Black FF 182 with cup packs and Recaros which was fantastic for me and never really missed the extra benefit of the Sachs suspension.

However part of me always slightly regrets it and if I was buying now, I would go for a Trophy all day long. Just love the extra exclusivity of them too.

No Xenons

Dampers need rebuilding when they need it, no service interval as such.

What you want to do is drive the both and see whats best for you

cheers chaps, the LY are pretty exclusive though.

So what is it the makes the Trophy better? is it just the ride? there cant be too many other changes?

  Mint 1*2's for sale-
Well youve chosen the best 3 options--

For outright looks the LY is the best, however the RB runs it close-- both cars if maintained well will sell easily- ( dont buy a RB 182 CUP)

if your looking for a drivers car then the trophy hands down--- like for like its WAY above the standard 182-

In terms of budget ~ have 1k for the belts & susp refurb-- BG motorsport only for susp- Specialist for belts
high 6's for a good car-- low 7's for a sub 40k one....

Owned both. Trophy all day long. I do heart the illusion that trophy's are bad because the suspension needs a rebuild once in a while. As opposed to the standard 182, with it's magic dampers that will never wear out. Ever.

Haha I hear what your saying Brown bear.

Thanks for the info thier Steve.

I had a ride out in PSJ's LY at the weekend and did like it. Also one has come in the for sale section which looks really nice and has had belts done which I would be looking for.

I had a similar dilemma recently, and after driving a couple of Trophy's decided I didn't really need the sachs suspension, and as Liquid Yellow is (I believe) rarer than a Trophy I went for a LY 182 and not regretted it.

Only thing I wish I had was recaro's, but it's nice to have xenons, climate control etc., mines not a cup so no splitter (yet) or spoiler. Depends what you want I guess!

Final thing that decided it was I needed this colour in my life!

This has been a constant debate in my head too for the last few months, and finally settled on a Trophy. Will be on the hunt for one as soon as my car sells!

Have you just bought this? I did look at this on pistonheads, i recognise the stickers. It seemed to be the only LY for sale that I could come across until on in for sale section

I'd buy the trophy as i think it looks the nicest, and whereas the 182 are possibly heading towards chav territory, the trophy (if kept looking clean and nice) still looks like a respectable car.

As for any other benefits of a trophy, blow them out, they are just marketing chat unless your journey to work is on a racetrack.

Have you had one Alan? sounds like a statement an owner/former owner would make??

This man speaks the truth about the Trophy, yes the dampers are special but the difference it makes on real roads at non-insane speeds - not a lot really apart from shaking your fillings out, as for damper rebuilds, had mine from new so 5 years old and the dampers are fine, that said it has only done just short of 34k, but in any case, I think figures of circa. £500 have been mentioned for rebuilding, other than that theres no difference in running costs than any other 182 variant - besdies buying the thing of course ;)

It's not all doom and gloom though, it does still feel 'special' hard to say why it's just a feeling that makes me smile every time I drive it.

Overall I'd say if you can get one at a decent price go for it, unless you grab a wrong'un' you really won't regret it, that said a LY182 is a very close second, if i'm honest it's the only other colour i'd go for on a 182, the one that Tommy_C has bought is a gorgeous motor - I would ;)

I haven't owned a Trophy but did test drive one along side a 182 with cup packs, which i eventually bought purely as it was cheaper and I liked black gold! I bought mine when they were still fairly new out, so the standard ones looked as good as the Trophy at the time, and the Trophy's were all still fairly new and priced high. I traded in my 172 for the 182FF, and it was interesting to be able to drive my 172, then test drive a 182 with cup packs, then the Trophy all within about half an hour of each other.

Dont get me wrong i could feel the difference in the road feel between a 182FF and trophy, but no more so than say the 172 and the 182FF.

But overall the Trophy has aged better, looks nicer and is going to hold its value more, so i'd go for one of these today, and none of it would be because of the handling.

I getcha, figured you must have at least been behind the wheel at some point, some people (I've been guilty of this) get a tad carried away over the Trophy at times, and yeah I couldn't have summed it up any better than the racetrack on the way to work.

I'd get a FF LY182 ;)

PSJ.

Haha i bet you would!!

Its still drawing me in over the trophy.

I dont have a personal race track so maybe wont notice the diff although i will be venturing on track or thats the plan

Reviews are not the be all and end all, but this sums up the Trophy for me. I was glad every time I turned the key to be in a Trophy over all the other RS'. Regardless of the slightly feminine colour, a LY 182 is just the same as all other 182's. A Trophy is a more special experience, and more fun over every A-road and B-road.

This maby the case but I have a friend who owns a trophy and is a great driver. iv had loads of runs out with him on some brilliant b-roads around the Cumbria area n there was nothing in it tbh.. With each other all the way.

Maby on the track a trophy might pull a few tenths and may feel slightly more capable but realistically thats all.

Performance wise nothing in it. Drive wise the trophy may slighty be better depending what roads you are on.

It's not about speed ya halfwit! The Trophy could be slower, but it would still have the sweeter chassis and be more fun to drive. Because Billy-bob and Cleetus can drive them at roughly the same speed
means bugger all. I doubt either of you are capable of extracting the best from either car!

PS: At road speeds there would be no real difference in pace. Pushing it to the point of a gap opening up would be irresponsible.

I've owned a 172 and now have a Trophy. In essence, I've had a FF spec and Cup spec car. It'll be pretty clear if you want the Trophy or the toys. I do miss some of the finer elements of the 172 but the Trophy's handaling is very different.

Probs not warren but it still gives a clearer picture. Depending on what he wants out of the car.

All I was trying to state was that it's as capable as a trophy.

At road speeds, all hot hatches are ffs. Point is you can't push them (safely) hard enough on the road for the differences to be apparent.

Both good cars, but the Trophy is better. The Trophy is not slightly better to drive, it's far better imo.

I don't understand the fuss over xenon's on these cars, the ph2 xenons are pisch! Poor coverage, a non-xenon car with uprated bulbs provides more light.

So in essence you miss out on auto-wipers, that don't function well. And climate, that manages the temp as effectively as a menopausal diabetic!

Has the OP driven either?
