182 Gearbox issue - no fifth gear. Advice please!

Just driving home when the engine revs raced up all of a sudden, thought the car had jumped out of gear and found 5th gear had totally vanished. All the other gears work fine but the gearbox is making a right noise now. I've searched through the forum and there seems to be various thoughts on what it may be - a new clip, synchromesh, selector or the whole gearbox itself!
If anyone could shed a bit of light on it or maybe has experienced it themselves and could advise it would be appreciated. Also could anyone me how much (roughly) it would cost to get fixed at Renault (so I can use that as a guide price).

Thanks guys.

They won't fix it, they will most likely want to replace the gearbox.

Best way I can describe the noise is like a low metallic clattering/grumbling - its doing it even when not in gear. Other than 5th (and the noise) the gearbox is working fine. I'm really surprised at this as I don't hammer the thing about and it's only done 60k - still on its original clutch (and rear tyres for that matter!).
So I'm potentially looking at a new gearbox? Great. Any idea of costs involved at Renault? Also are there any parts worth replacing while the gearbox is off? Clutch is an obvious one but anything else that is a gearbox off job?

Thanks guys.

Ask Agency Transmissions. They can refurb your gearbox. Think it's around £200 but depends on damage etc. Personally I wouldn't go to Renault. If you know of someone who could help you with removing it and send it to this company. A good time to change the clutch as well

Don't go to renault they will charge silly money, If you can't get the box out yourself then find a local garage they will be half the price, either a second hand box or have yours reconditioned.

Boxes supplied by Renault arent as expensive as some may think

You got any idea on price at all? I'll give them a buzz tomorrow and see if I can get something a bit more definitive but it would be good to know beforehand what to roughly expect.

  anything i get
Didn't the end nut used to fall off 5 gear as its added on the box
Yes can do , could be as simple as removing the end casing and refitting correctly the fifth gear set , may be lucky .
Renault may well fix it correctly and fairly , or they may not , like anywhere it all depends on who's doing the job.
Hope it is cheap easy fix.

This is probably the case, we use the same Family of Gearbox's in the Nissan Micra and Note its extremly common thing to happen, remove the end casing and re-tighten the Nut on the end of the Input shaft.

Hope you get it sorted and it is as simple as this.

Cheers for the responses guys - always appreciated. I'm hoping it is going to be as simple as tightening a nut. I'll get in booked in tomorrow and keep the thread updated in case anyone else gets a similar issue.

Looks like I won't be going to Renault!

Are you still driving the car Nick?

It's just that when mine started popping out of 5th it wasn't long until the box completely shut up shop.

No I'm not Steve. The gear box went about 10 or so miles from home so I drove it back and haven't touched it since. Interestingly I hadn't experienced any popping out of gear like you did, but thinking about it now the box was very whiney when in 5th doing about 40mph. I had put it down to the fact it was in a high gear at a relatively low speed but it seems I was wrong!

I'm hoping to source a decent second hand one and hopefully my mate can do the labour at his garage - just waiting on a price for that. And following on from that if anyone has got a good quality gearbox for sale feel free to get in contact - if it looks good I'll be in touch.

Thanks.

When you said no fifth gear I assumed it was because it either wouldn't go in at all or it kept jumping out.

No it literally went from being in gear and driving along at 70 to engine revs suddenly rising, slowing down and finding fifth gear had vanished! I thought it had popped out of gear but when I put it back into fifth and nothing happened that I realised I had a slight problem. As I say all the other gears work, no problem selecting etc. If it wasn't for the racket it's making (and the lack of fifth) you'd think it was all good.
Just watched the video you posted on your thread Steve - that whining noise sounds just like mine has for the last few months.

If it's just a whine then it seems your okay for a few miles but if there's any knocking like mine then it's likely imminent failure is on the way.

Well the whine has gone (along with fifth) and there's now a metallic knocking/clattering noise in its place that is present even when not in gear and just idling. Hopefully it'll drive far enough for me to get it to the garage though when I finally get the bits I need together.

Lol, Cost me £850 for my box, £105 for my clutch, Knowing me by Name and seeing a fair bit of me obviously helped,

One of the mastertechs offered to bung it in on the drive too
