182- LOUD Whine Above 3000rpm with throttle flat/nearly flat? Anyone had this?

Hello everyone, i'm quite a new member as you can see as i've only had my clio 182 for just under a month. Since driving the car (have done 1000miles in it already) everything seemed ok and had some mods planned. HOWEVER now a strange whine has developed with only happens when accelerating hard with the throttle flat to the floor or nearly flat to the floor. The whine kicks in at 3000rpm (sounds like a turbo spooling up however a clio obviously doesnt have one) and gets louder all the way through the rev range. I took my car to my friends garage today and had it up on the ramp for a look. Definitely isn't any wheel or brake bearing issues.

Sorry for the essay but this is really annoying and just was hoping that someone else has had this same problem (have looked at other inconclusive threads) and managed to get it sorted or knows what it is. Thoughts?

Have you got the standard induction set up on it?? My friends induction kit makes it sound like there is a turbo spooling after 5k RPM under hard acceleration.

I have a sort of whilstle that increases in pitch with the revs, it's not too loud and I assume it's normal... (although it's probably something gearbox related knowing my luck! lol).

as above, with a standard set-up I used to have some funky noise coming under full-throttle/ high-revs.

but now it's gone and I am much saddened.

would something as basic as changing from a free-flow panel filter to a normal renault-spec version do this?

Just made me think, I changed from a standard renault to a K&N filter... maybe that's where mines coming from!! lol

It does sound rather like my old 2.0 laguna that I had (got it for £300 as a run about...) When driving that it sounded like an episode of the clangers!

I did mention this to the guy at the garage that it could be something intake related but he wasn't sure, here's a picture of the induction kit that came on the car when I bought it. I've been thinking about switching it back to the standard set up but it hasn't caused a problem as of yet so haven't. I don't think that it is the induction kit though, the sound is loud and is not like the faint high pitched noise some kits produce, sounds like something else to me.

Please note I am very saddened that i HAVE the noise! It's not cool at all it just makes the car sound like something is wrong when accelerating, clio's dont have turbos and if they did the spool up wouldn't sound like this noise it's just something i can relate it to. So wanting to find out what it is fast! If no one on here knows what i'm talking about or a solution then I might upload a video tomoz trying to capture the sound.

A couple of things.

Ever heard of Heatsoak? Get a standard set up on there, you are probably down on power by the time the engine warms up.

Also, that CAF will do nothing whatsoever.

I reckon the noise will go once you have a standard set up on there. You should be able to source on for £50 max, and you can sell that on to someone else to make some of your money back.

EDIT: If you don't do that, at least clean that foam thing, it is filthy, looks like it has been on there at least one year.

Yeah lol i'm doing a motorsport engineering degree at uni so fully aware of the affect/cause of heat soak. This is how the induction kit came when i bought the car, I assure you it is not how I would set it up as I don't believe in induction kits and think there more noise than power. I'm looking to get it to running good before any mods so probably will switch back to a standard air box. When it was on the ramp today I also noticed that the exhaust mounts were ancient and the exhaust itself is very rusty. I'm going to purchase the militek (iirc) exhaust off the ktr website and fit it next week so i'll do the air box at the same time and hopefully the noise will go! Video of the noise to follow....

I had this problem or similar when i first bought my clio sport last year. The problem was a hole in the exhaust system. As soon as i got this patched up it was beaut.

Might be worth a check! :)

we may be talking about different noises here. The noise I had wasn't loud enough to be noticeable outside......I dont think.

It certainly didn't sound broken, or like a turbo on-song.

I see, well it doesn't really sound like a blowing exhaust to me but i'm gonna change the exhaust coz it was rusty as fcuk and get a standard airbox this weekend hopefully. Once i've done that i'm praying it stops. There was something else i noticed about the car when on the ramp that i'm gonna start another thread about soon :(

If you have a specialist near you (who's recommended on here) might be worth taking it to them to let them have a drive/listen.

I did that with mine and the issue was identified within minutes. (dephaser :-()

If it's a loud whine could it not be gearbox related anyone..?

I'll hedge a bet with an Aux belt idler. Always follows rpm in pitch and volume and does sound 'charger' like.

Cool!

What about a quiet whistle that increases with revs...? (just had full cam and aux kit done and dephaser by a local specialist)

Worrying me that it's gear box related... (gearbox is quite stiff when cold but has never popped out or made any grinding noises)

This sounds more on the money (literally) however I was hoping it wasnt this due to the cost of getting the work done :( If it is this then it could be the bearing on the idler perhaps? As previously said im studying motorsport engineering but am better with the design side rather than the mechanical so here is a picture below of the only pulley I could see when under the car, notice how it looks fucked perhaps due to the abscence of the inner wheel arch trim? I checked the belt for wear and looks good. Anyone know of a clio specialist I could go to for a more educated opinion in hertfordshire area or enfield?

That's totally normal, and that's the main crank pulley, the idler is the furthest foward on the aux setup at the bottom. I'd also be dubious that you can check the wear of the belt visually, or even while it is on the car at all!

As previously said im studying to be an engineer not a mechanic lol, I just gave it a visual check, compared to the cambelt on my gti lupo before it was done it looks mint. The lupo's cambelt had cracks in the material that suggested it was on the verge of snapping. I'm gonna get a new exhaust and get the standard air box coz there both gonna need doing so hopefully that will sort it. When you said the aux belt idler I assume you do mean the bearing within the pulley?
