thanks for the reply.

sure that was fine becasue thats what renault used last time :D

Thanks again!

I'd be very suprised if renault used that, they ussualy just use cheapo 10-40 weight

That will be fine although im sure a few people have complained saying it made it a bit tappy. Maybe im thinking of castrol i cant remember

0w Is suitable down to some MIGHTY cold temps.
5w or 10w is normal practice, but 0w is fine
mobil1 is pretty gash tho, buy some silkolene or something

Whats your theory behind that ??

Iv run Silkolene in the past and run Mobil 1 and guess what?? you cant tell one jot of difference.
As long as its the correct grade and its regularly changed and your not pro racing at 7tho rpm everywhere imo i dont think the extra expence of Silkoline can be justified against like for like decent branded oil.

*****

Most Renault dealers use Castrol i belive as replacement / top up.

Just FYI I bought 5 litres of fully syn 5-40 for £13.50 the other day and the ratings on it are exactly the same as halfords own stuff which is twice the price hmmm...

Mobil 1 is damn good stuff - I've just put some in the 182 at it's 24K service.

I am a chemist, developing oils for a living, and have seen many commercial oils compared in some severe engine testing. Seeing the difference between a good and a poor oil in the same engine test really does show the value in paying for a good oil... It may have the same viscosity grade on the tin - but it's the additive pack and base oil mix that really make an oil perform, but also that make a good one more expensive.

Thats cool point noted! But what about if you have an expensive oil and a cheap oil but they both have identical ratings? Same stuff or...?

Again - it can be down to more subtle things - they may have the same "standard" credentials (such as ACEA A4), but the manufacturer specific approvals may be very different (and this is where a lot of cost and effort is involved in producing a fluid to meet the more stringent OEM standards) - look for the MB (e.g. 229.3/229.5) and VAG (e.g. 503.00/507.00) credentials. These are generally the more tough manufacturer specifications and cost a lot in engine testing and also need much better components to pass. They have specific tests covering different aspects of performance from fuel economy to sludge resistance, which all have their own pass/fail criteria on the various parameters, from engine cleanliness, wear or fuel consumption - it's a pretty complex business!
General guidance would be the more credentials, and the higher the number, the better (such as MB 229.5>229.3)! Be careful also to look for one which is approved against the specifications, rather than suitable for use in... Suitable for use may mean it hasn't necessarily been fully tested, and it certainly doesn't have a formal approval against the specification. Often the cheaper oils say suitable for use, while the top tier versions are fully tested and approved...

Hope this helps!

I've been on an inside and out tour of the Fuchs oil factory. Every aspect was revealed to us.

It opened my eyes as to what goes on, and how good oil is blended, i'd highly recommend Fuchs after my visit. I'm not on commision ;) lol

I can get discount through a contact i met there too... free gallon or so at least per order. Tutor at my college is a personal friend of the big cheese at the plant also. They knows theys stuffs.

Indeed fuchs do know thei onions... or oils as it were.

They also make Silkolene, a popular choice with clio sports.

Cheers

Guy.
